Title: Got myself a clapped out 1400
Post by: Willow on Tuesday, 14 April 2026, 08:32 PM
Hi Folks,
I'm Willow from Sydney Aus.

I just got myself a very rough gsx1400. It needs lots of cosmetic work and hopefully not much mechanical attention but we will see once i start riding it out. I passed blue slip and have it registered and hoping to keep it going as my only other vehicle is a RE interceptor 650 I am trying to sell. Any tips for keeping these running well or pointers to members or posts that might help would be appreciated.

2008
Km:120,000

I look forward to using the hive mind and having some fun.
Photos to come in the morning

Allo Willow, that's hardly run in for one of these so should last you years.

Welcome.

At 120.000km it is barely run in.
We have seen 1400 with 300.000km plus.

As to pointers... there is a "new to me / buyers guide"  thread with that kind of info.

Welcome mate, lots of info on here.

Anyone with decent mechanical skills can fix these up  they're pretty bulletproof

G'day Willow and welcome to the nuthouse.
All the information you'll need is either on record on here or you can pick the brains of longtime owners.
I'm looking forward to seeing the pictures.
@Hooli has just resurrected Mk2 and a Varadero. Now moving on to his prized possession of his original GSX that was recovered after being stolen a second time.
Your bike can't be too bad if it passed for registration though.

I can't seem to attach photos as they're too large, I took some while the sun is out. Mechanically it seems fine except for lugging, lurching at less than 3k rpm might be clutch switch isn't happy with a busa lever I put on. I'll put the original lever back on, only swapped as it was broken and didn't want anything that silly to be pinged on blue slip.

Is there a way for me to get photos up here?

Photo Resizer app, works perfectly and free. Just select photo, percentage reduction, add to your library. Can then post on here, has to be less than around 1000. Push preview then add to drag n drop section. Maybe other ways but works for me.

That works for me, I was expecting rougher with how you described it.

Make sure your chain tension is right for starters, it makes a big difference. Balancing the throttles is worth doing too, there's a thread in the tech section if you don't know what I mean.

As a test you can unplug the clutch switch once the bike is running, just to rule that out. Don't run with it bridged as it affects the fueling & ignition maps for easier starting. I tried it once & my bike was slow, thirsty & backfired as I opened the throttle.

I've just remembered the other thing I was going to suggest Willow.

Check or just replace the vacuum pipes off the throttle bodies to the MAP sensor & PAIRS valve (if still fitted). They split with age & cause the symptoms you're getting. It's 3.2mm ID hose so a common fitment & any car spares place will carry it, just don't snap the T-pieces or you'll need to replace those too.
