Title: Painting the GSX a new colour?
Post by: Coopz on Tuesday, 24 February 2026, 11:25 AM
I have a blue K2. I do like the blue colour but the tank has a few little scratches, the mudguard is a slightly different shade of blue and well... I wouldn't mind a change. I know changing a vehicles default colour devalues it but I don't care, I'll keep this thing till it blows up or I can no longer get my leg over it. The Candy blue is also a bitch to matchup colour wise.
Was looking at doing it in satin black, or a new colour silver. I've had a few 1400s and liked the black one the most but they are a dust magnet.

Anyone else repainted the 1400? Any colour recommendations? I would get it done by a professional as well.

Well I guess painting it the shade of Black (as we all know it's not a colour) is fine, it'll probably slow you down though so beware :stir:  :stir:  :stir:

Surely, it would simpler to buy some candy blue and have it blown over, so, it matches.  :whatever:

However, as you say that you don't care, about devaluing the bike and want, to change the colour.

Then why ask for colour choices, pick one that you like, you'll have to live with it.  :confused1:

Loads of people repaint them, I don't think anyone cares if it's original as far as value goes. They're Jap bikes so will never be a classic, they're just old. Just do it if you want to do it.

I bought a black thinking that would happen, but it didn't work.

If I ever repaint my K2 (b&w), I will paint it black, as I have done to many of my bikes!
Black is fast enough to old man like me...

TBH it's a possibility for the restoration of my proper 14 too. If I get it done over the B/W it'll have stealth speed too.

Paint it the same blue again. The true story is actually that on the eighth day the allmighty one sat down with a rum and coke and looked what he had made. When he saw how he had fucked up making the woman he decided to make a motorcycle. It was a perfect one and a fast one....an all blue GSX 1400. He went on making more and after a few more rum- cokes he got sloppy and started to make some with small faults. Instead of fixing them he gave them other colours, thats why there are blue and whites and so on.Some had so many faults that He named them Honda and Yamaha, the ones that were a complete mess he called Harleys.

Bluey has repainted his bike, couple of times I think. Results came out looking like professional - maybe he is?   dunno.

I'm sure there are pic's on the site of Blueys bikes, anyone got one?  Think he did a light blue rizzla one too.

I'm not a professional spray painter.  But had a mate who was.  He taught me everything to do and how to do it properly.  So with my bike I did it as a bare metal/plastic panel respray.  Taking out any imperfections as I went through the process.  Took me about 4-6 weeks from start to finish, including the 4 coats of clear. No stickers are on the bike, its all done in paint - hence the extra time it took with all the masking.  Made it to be a Wes Cooley tribute to the old Blue/White Suzuki GS1000S, which my late brother used to own one.

I learnt all the skills to paint as it fits in with my airbrush artwork, as I was also painting a few show bikes many years ago, with murals on the tanks etc.

I still have a second full complete set of bodywork for the 1400.  Working up a design that I will spray it in.  Thinking of keeping the blue and white scheme, but making it a Barry Sheene tribute or something along the lines of the Team Classic Suzuki style..  At least then I don't need to change the registration papers regarding the colour of the bike.

I don't do a lot of painting for other people, only because I don't do it full-time and for some reason a few people just thought I could do it in a couple weekends work.. yeah right..    but that may well change when I retire from work.. and go to semi-retirement.

Barry Sheene tribute.

See below, the man himself. Far right in the flat cap. The man bending down with the bald spot, is his dad. Rider, the late great, Phil Read

I never realised they were related, how had that fact always passed me by?
