I got both car & bike licence on my 17th birthday so in those 60 years I've never had an accident on the road ... until now. Fucking blacked out at 110kph but managed to miss everything that's put there to kill me, except those wire cheese cutter things that I hated when I was riding. Walked away without a scratch & the airbags didn't even deploy. Car totalled but the trailer has survived.
So after two weeks of tests & scans the doctors can't find a definite cause so that clean licence is now in their hands. Shit, I might have to buy a mobility scooter to get around if I can't drive.
If ya gonna gave a first big crash that's quite an impressive one mate!
Also, is that a Subaru Brat in the breakers? not seen one in years as they all dissolved here.
Pleased you're ok Pete. That's pretty frightening. Why do believe you blacked out rather than fell asleep, or did you know you were going ? Did you come round straight away?
My dad blacked out recently, he's 91. He has no recollection of what led to him going down.
Pleased it wasn't worse for you. Go well.
V6 Hilux too, great truck don't see many here.

First indication Col was a light headed moment and thinking I'd better pull over. All I remember from then was a lot of noise & seeing people around the car. I think if I'd nodded off the first hit on the guard rail would have woken me.
Glad you're ok...many folk who crash at those speeds are seriously injured or die.
For your peace of mind, I hope the clinicians get to the bottom of what occurred. Did they wonder if you'd had a TIA (Trans Ischaemic Attack)? These are commonly called 'mini strokes'. Because they are transitory (symptoms can pass in minutes),they don't normally show up on scans. They're more easily diagnosed if someone witnesses the person having the TIA.
Glad you came through it Pete. Bloody scary event for sure. Do the doc's have to find a cause else the cops will revoke your license? I think that scenario is more traumatic than the actual crash, I'd hate to not be able to 'go' when I wanted to.
I hope it all works out for ya mate.

My heart specialist is the one with all the say Col. He has to inform Service NSW that in his opinion I'm fit to drive. One option he has if he's not sure is to recommend a modified licence for older drivers. This restricts distance but at least allows me to drive to the shops, doctors or in my case to the steel suppliers because I still do a bit of work.

With my heart problems I'm sure my specialist has thought of that but I will bring it up next visit.
Good that you've got a heart specialist, as they'll have considered a cardiac arrhythmia...they can cause lightheadedness and loss of consciousness.
Snapey, glad youre ok, anything couldve happened but didnt.

Grog, I went over the wire & for a second was facing traffic coming the other way but for some reason the car did a hard left & finished back on the wire. How I didn't collect some poor bugger coming the other way I'll never know. My time wasn't up.
Lucky alright.....your name wasn't on the page for that day.
Lucky escape Snapey, hope everything turns out fine for you.
Mate that's an impressive stroke of luck being your first accident in sydney traffic. Good to see your time wasn't up and have walked away. Have nursed my share of folks after high speed accidents. It's rarely a good life again, damn lucky to not be there. All the best
Old age, lying in bed, not sure if its raining or tinnitus? Enjoy being young, old sucks.

if the beds wet its either raining very hard and your roof has leaked, or way past your getting up time.
Talk about not hearing, jez, I'm real bad, especially without my aids in. Wee anecdote for ya,
I was just remarking the other week to the Mrs, I was at the kitchen bench buttering some fresh cooked toast, she was sitting at the table across the room. I noticed something, with holding the toast in my left hand while I buttered it I could feel the knife scraping across the toast surface, but not hear it. I could feel tiny vibrations in my left mit so I knew it was making a scraping sound but I hear nothing! I said to Mrs, can you hear me buttering the toast? She go yes of course, I say well I can't hear it & I'm doing it!!
I'm off to Christchurch next week for another audiogram & check, they told me last time there's not much they can do really and a cochlear implant is next. Nope, just never getting one of them, just not.
Probably better than carrying a trumpet around with you Col.
My Mate Dave been thru the cochlear story. Lots of problems, lots of money. Not sure he ended up better off.
I suffer from industrial tinnitus as well.
Last hearing test showed not much decline since the previous test, so thats good. They advised hearing aids won't do much at all, even the 10k top of the range ones.
During the test, one of the tests was with the bone conducting type headphones, the ones that make direct contact with the bone in your skull. I found it very clear and comfortable, a slight mixing of sounds m, as your eardrums are still transmitting.
I assume a CI works the same, maybe the tech has changed or will change to improve bone conducting based hearing aids.
No CI has a 'mechanical / digital' type sound, basically you have to learn how to hear all over again. Not for this kid anyway.
Pardon?
Can you sit on my good side when typing please?
My right ear is useless if there's background noise, when it's quiet I can hear everything though.
CI has cost my Mate 10 yrs of frustration, maybe $40k, has even moved states to sort it. They replaced it , thats a hospital thing, not just changing your earpiece. He still cant hear, cant stand crowded places, he tried so hard, had to give up his bikes, his work, i followed all his drama thru his email. Not a good story, very sad really.
Glad everything came out alright in the end. In this forum, despite not knowing people or even their faces seems like we know each other; same names over the years, just like the bikes. Getting old. I still came from the old .org.
CI is certainty an advantage for the profoundly deaf and young children who will adapt to whatever works for them.
It's an Aussie invention also.

Pete you do realise that's 10k's above the limit.

The speed limit on the Hume Highway at Boxers Creek is 110 km/h Jeffrey.
Snapey they'll probably hgave you off the road for a while anyway until they can figure out what went wrong (or rather, why).
My dad just had a fall off a ladder the other week (yep usual stupid old 87 year old man behaviour) and while his cracked skull etc heals he has a 6 month 'no driving' break. He's not happy (usually he's an excellent driver especially for his age).
Silly bugger didn't even want to go to the hospital when it happened and he regained consciousness despite a lot of blood...
Years ago I had what turned out to be an epileptic fit and also had a 6 month break luckily they figured out what it was and its the type that can be controlled by medication so I can drive.

Every heart & brain scan I've had so far, and there's been plenty, haven't shown anything definite. I'm booked in for a sleep apnoea test then a cardio MRI & if there's nothing there then a probe will be surgically placed under the skin. Talk about over kill by the heart specialists. At least the GP is more realistic in his diagnosis in saying I had very little sleep with over 5 hours driving, one short stop and was dehydrated. You nodded off he said. In the meantime while all this is going on my driving is restricted to a 20km radius from home and no highways.
Yeah I have that sleep apnoea too and when I got the CPAP it made a big difference to how tired I (am no longer) feeling.

Not when you are towing a trailer mate.
The limit here for towing is 90, cops can be quite zealous if you're going over 95 with a trailer. I just thought Aussie, must be different rules there.
@Snapey Hey Pete, reckon I've figured out a possible / probable cause of your black out.
They can't find anything wrong with you because there isn't anything amiss there, it was the vehicle! I reckon it was probably
carbon monoxide poisoning, odourless, tasteless & invisible. If it were this it would account for the lack of issues they can find with you, also once the engine stops so does the poisoning & your body begins to clear it. Medics would have been treating your physical injuries first & you feeling like shite would also be explained by the impact damage to the ole body, but I bet they didn't test for carbon monoxide poisoning at the time eh! It'll be gone from your system now so can't check that. The exhaust system on the ute may still be able to be examined, but since there was not a death, I doubt the investigators will go to that forensic level. However improbable, it fits the circumstances.
It's something you should bring up with your doc's, as it would show it wasn't you & you'll be fine to drive anywhere again.
Interesting theory Col about carbon monoxide poisoning. It's never been mentioned before but either has the heart medication the specialist has me on. I had an appointment with a sleep apnoea doctor today & the first thing he spotted when going through my medications was Forxiga. The side effects from Forxiga could also have been the cause of my black out. I have to do a sleep apnoea test in a week so the results from that will be interesting.
By the way Col and Irish, the trailer is rated at 100kph so yes I was speeding. Mind you I'm wondering if 110kph setting on the cruise control isn't closer to 100 in real life.

Riding in a couple of months maybe..... The risk of the hip popping out is there so being bloody careful. But seems easier than when I had the knee done ? .

Legend Roo! I didn't know you were having a hip replacement, best wishes for a smooth recovery mate.
Hang in there Roo.Youll come good👍I played golf with a lady who had both hips& both knees replaced. She walked the course.
All the best for a swift and full recovery Roo.
