Title: Timing chain Rattle or ok?
Post by: Xdiavel on Monday, 07 July 2025, 07:00 PM
Good Morning all,

First a bit of History, I recently did my Valve clearances and the chain tension was very tight. Before doing this I rode with a pair of pipe worx exhausts with no baffles so this masked a lot of engines noise.

When I did the timing and the chain tensioner there was now a bit of movement in the chain now, I would say a 1cm inc so 0.5cm down and up  and to me seemed more healthy than a piano string chain.

My issue is now I have the OEM cans back on so the bike is now super quiet so I can hear everything lol When the bike is standing and revved it sounds fantastic now (I had a few Valves that needed re-shimming) and no noises from the engine.

But, when on the move, like pulling away and low rpm pulls I can hear like a chain rattle, Nothing major but just like a ticking. I cannot remember if it was like this before so was just wondering if this is normal due to mechanical noise these have or the chain needs tightening.

The bike rides like new.

Bike has 9k mls

Thanks

There is often a ticking noise coming from the injectors, this is normal.  Diagnosing a noise is very difficult, can you get hold of a stethoscope or just use a long handle screwdriver and isolate the noise a bit?

Hi mate, I think the ticking may not be the best way to describe it, But does sound like chain noise, It goes over 2.5k rpm but doesn't do it when just standing strangely which led me to thinking this is just a characteristic of the Engine as to me if it was the chain it would do it at start up when cold and most of the time when riding or not  :confused1:

Freeplay on the Drive chain should be 20 to 30 mm when the bike is on the side stand, yours is very tight still, at 10mm.

Check for any kinks or dry links as these will tick as they go over the front sprocket.

Andy hooli has over 175k miles his bike apart from servicing his bike has never been apart and it's on the original cam chain .
Sounds very wrong to be needing that much at such a low milage ?
Actually service intervals are every 4k and valves check is 25k miles again the valves hardly ever need changed (hooli's still In original spec at 175k.

Just to clarify, the 1cm free play is in the timing chain not the drive chain.  :onya:

Mate if I paid attention to all the rattles and noisy on my 2001 model I'd never ride it.🤔
You may consider lubricating the cam chain tensioner.😎
Good luck tracking down the noises you're now hearing because you've quieted your trusty steed. 😵💫

Theres a lot to be said for ear plugs. If youre really worried pull tensioner out for a look. There is a procedure in manual but others just remove and refit, new gasket required.Tensioner can also be clicked up a bit with screwdriver. All written on here, just need to search. Not sure how bike moving or stationary can affect cam chain. Im sure the chain wont be worn if anything, tensioner👍

Hi,

I could always hear a valve ticking on the right hand side of the engine since I bought it 3 yrs ago roughly, So just thought I would just check them out. Found Cylinder 4 was pretty much at its highest tolerances so shimmed them to be at the bottom range and now lovely and quiet. Love it. I may just try one more click on the cam chain tensioner to see if that changes anything. If not. The loud cans can go back on

I have been looking up about the valve clearances and some have suffered the same at low mls. Just not done right in the factory is my guess, As it all looked untouched.

As I really do not want to take the engine cover off again with all those Dowels and washers that can fall in lol
