Title: Dodgy fuel pump/aftermarket fuel pump?
Post by: gld1400 on Monday, 19 May 2025, 04:05 AM
Hi all
I had my 14 cut out on me with FI light on going along motorway a few weeks ago, luckily started again and was able able to get home. Today I took the fuel pump out to replace the teabag and the pump assembly itself doesn't look good?
If I could some guidance in this it'd be much appreciated.
1) The top of the black HP filter looks like it's been plastic welded at the top? Is this normal on these filters?
2) The pressure regulator should attach to the HP filter, but on mine it's not attached to anything and is positioned at an angle to the pump assembly? The regulator looks half rusted. The clip holding it on is only half attached too so good job I'm doing this now before it pops off inside the tank (I'd bought some stainless wire to secure the
clip to the assembly as detailed on here).
3) There's a white washer between the HP filter and the pump, I think there's a crack in this washer too...should this washer be here? I don't recall seeing this in the YouTube tutorials I saw.
4) Is this an aftermarket pump fitted? There's big gaps where the pump goes into the base plate, so fuel comes out from the plate.
5) It's been worked on before, the screws have marks on and there's gouges in the plastic towards the top of the assembly.
6) Lastly the fuel line linking the base plate to the tank looks kinked, is this ok as it's I think just the low pressure line?

Can this pump be repaired/saved, is this all ok or is it time to look for a replacement?
The bike was running ok before the cutout, a bit rough in low revs though.

Trying to add photos but they're are all too big to put on the post

Apologies for my long post everyone

Hopefully this works...

Gidday, there are a few threads about the fuel pump in the sticky section at the beginning of the Fuelling section.  Here are a couple that you may find useful.

Before we found the Hyabusa filter and hp pump, the Quantum EFI pump was also a good option. I have one in my K3, no issues.

Eric, no pump with filter assy so your option with it would be perfect👍

That all looks perfectly standard & normal except for the pressure relief valve half fallen out, which will have been your problem.

Cheers everyone,
Took the release valve off this eve, cleaned it up a bit. It looks like the electrical connectors for the pump are too big and the bottom of the valve is fouling on them, which is why its seated at an angle and cant fit squarely into the filter, so I'll need to replace the two wires.
Thanks also for info on the Quantums, just found the post here comparing the different fuel pumps.

Update, I'm going to replace the fuel pump, I've got an aftermarket Highflow one with blade terminals for the wires, which nearly fell off when I turned the pump upside down.
Is the Hayabusa pump ok to fit to the GSX with the Busa filter assembly? Looking at the Quantum pump too, it's more expensive though.
Thanks all, apologies for all my questions

I believe the Busa filter is identical except it's got two mounting holes at the top for the fuel level sensor we don't need. I'd assume the pump is the same as it seems to be the same one used across pretty much every FI Suzuki at the time.

I put a Busa one in last year, no problems at all, tied the new regulator in just as a precaution.

Cheers everyone,
Busa filter assembly it is.
Looking at the fuel pumps, has anyone here fitted the Kemso pumps?
They're a lot cheaper than the Quantum ones, made in Japan so should be good quality, rated at 200 lph, and comes with a lot of the parts I'll also need, like the grommets, connectors and I think the low pressure hose.

Kemso get good reviews.Either made Japan or Texas.

No, haven't tried those, but a good find.   The quantum is a direct drop in replacement. You get a bunch of different teabags etc and you have to assemble the reg onto it, but otherwise perfect fit

Have times changed that much since I sold my last 14 that nobody mentions bypassing the high pressure filter any more. The consensus seems to be that swapping the complete unit for a cheaper Hayabusa pump/filter is the best solution. Aren't the Busa and 1400 units the same design with both having a sealed high pressure filter that's prone to blocking? When the time comes for some maintenance do you guys still back flush or just replace the filter with a Busa one or has anyone drilled the hole to bypass HP filter lately?

Hey Snapey, hope you are well. Seems about 50/50 which way they go with filter.Im firm believer fuel flow/ pressure creates so many probs on 14 but people chase other probs to fix it.My external has been on a while now, never a problem. If that copy Busa filter had been around then, for $30, throw it away, fit newie, maybe thats how I wouldve gone.My pro flow filter now looks like needs new o ring, pro flow dont sell separately, cant find replacement that size, guess another filter, thatll be over $30. 😡

The only difference with the 'busa filter is a couple of blind holes on the top with brass inserts where the fuel level sensor would screw in. Considering I used to get 50k miles or so per high pressure filter what's the point in doing a custom setup when it's so cheap to get a fake filter that works these days?

External mod and in tank hp bypass hole works for me, cleaned out the pro flow after my dodgy fuel episode, amazing how much crud that sintered brass filter stops. Quantum fuel pump runs very well, been in 4 years now.

Apologies for the long wait for the update everyone.
Kemso pump and Busa filter were delivered but the wiring for the pump was a pain. Ended up waiting a month for brass ring terminals for the base plate to come in from China lol.
But is all done and pump now fitted in the tank. Stainless wire mod has been done as well.
Hadn't done wiring work for ages but managed to get the terminals crimped ok, heatshrink also put over the connections.
Sheath for the wiring is short on one side but should be ok fingers crossed.
Next is throttle body balancing and TPS check.
Cheers again everyone
