Title: Rear Sprocket Nuts
Post by: steve0694 on Thursday, 16 January 2025, 05:28 PM
Just replacing my Chain and Sprockets 2002 Bike, when removing the rear sprocket i noticed the existing nuts where a nylon type. Reading the manual it says replace them. Do they need to be replaced like for like (if so is it a standard nylon nut or should it be oem) or can i use a normal M12 with some Loctite? Sorry if stupid question new to working on my bike so just want to get it right.

Someone is surely more knowledgeable than me ... I'd be inclined to reuse them with lock tight...  :whatever:

Same. Unless they are scabby or look like they've had a hard life I clean them up, use a bit of non-perm Loctite (same as my disc bolts) refit and forget.

Mate, use again or buy some new stainless nyloc nuts, very cheap. Used need loctite. 👍I buy new as they look pretty and local bolt shop is just too cheap, sometimes dont even charge.

Thanks all, probably over thinking it as usual, read a post on here where guy said his sprocket came loose using existing nuts. Freaked me out a bit. Will buy new ones tomorrow and get on with it.

I always reuse with a bit of Blue loktite.

I have seen a VFR where the studs backed out after being reused & not loktited (proably not tight too knowing who did it) they ate halfway through the single side swingarm before he stopped for fuel. No way he didn't feel that thumping!

It's hard to believe but there are a great many people who are overlooked by Darwin. Something with his theory seems to be a miss.  :whatever:
