Title: Help needd, blown head bulbs.
Post by: Jeykey on Sunday, 01 December 2024, 08:41 PM
Blown 2 or 3 headbulbs (or even 4) in about 6 months. Checked voltage with engine stopped got 12v on both low or high. Those values changed to 17v with engine running. Still need to check stator and regulator/rectifier. 2,5 y.o. battery with the tester indicates it´s needing a change. Any other ideas ? Thanks in advance.

17v way to much, 14.5 around max. Now to search why, good luck🍀🍀

As grog says, 17v is way too high. It'll be the reg/rec, the reg part regulates the voltage down to 14.5v or so for charging as it leaves the stator around 60v. The rec part, turns it from AC into DC.

Already got it out, one of the pins has a high reading... Will give feedback later.

Suzuki don't have a great reputation for Reg/Rec's. A few models have had issues and other have less but still random failures, no normally so much with 14's though I think.

I had a bike with 2 factory recalls before I gave up and modded a Mosfet one to fit and it's been perfect ever since,

Noticed lately voltmeter reading 13.6 cruising, higher at idle. From memory used to be over 14. No starting probs etc but might change the rectifier, if no better i guess need stator. Job done either way. Around $200 for mofset from Peter Stevens.

Seems like the wrong one and expensive.

I've found this one on Ebay

https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/226296537608?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&mkrid=705-154756-20017-0&ssspo=4sob1myvrhe&sssrc=4429486&ssuid=_M0J_4k6R_O&var=&widget_ver=artemis&media=COPY

Diagram from mick hone below, seems like the same rec used from 2002 to 2007 and across multiple models

Thanks Eric, it worries me fitting chinese electrical parts as vital as regulator. Think id rather pay the $200 for Japanese Shindengen, they rate highly, there are cheaper Shindengen but are chinese knock offs. Peace of mind etc etc😎Think Hooli just went thru the chinese stator experiment

I did indeed, three months later it stopped putting any ampage out. Tests fine, just doesn't produce any charging current.

So my logic is correct, pay the bucks, fit and forget,im always like that.

grog seems way to cheap for a Shindengen. I ordered a chineseum one from Amazon just for troubleshooting and was worse than my impaired one, putting out 18v!! Going back. Here in Eurpoe ordered a Mosfet one from this guy, seems good to me: https://ultimaterectifier.com/shop/voltage-regulator-rectifier-suzuki-gsx1400-2001-2009/ (https://ultimaterectifier.com/shop/voltage-regulator-rectifier-suzuki-gsx1400-2001-2009/)

I would agree with you on fitting cheap knockoffs, buyer beware, and all that.  Fitting genuine is best, but always so expensive.  The tech has changed, I think one of these mosfet rectifiers would be worth looking at.

Don't forget that OEM is often Chinese.

just had a look at these units, they seem very well made.  I'm interested.

It's a bugger to find anything unless you search part numbers I've found.

https://japan.webike.net/ps/32800-42F00/#!search&p.k=32800-42F00

£86 compared to £270 from dealers here.

Eric, ive studied up on Shindengen, they seem to be the best. Prob is copied multiple times.Even Mick Hone part doesnt have pics to prove genuine. Must have 8 dots on top casting. Must have partnumber engraved on rear surface. Must have stainless plate on mounting surface.Too bloody difficult for me to know whats right or wrong. Have enjoyed the detective work, got me nowhere really.

Got a tourmax labeled reg/rec. Took label off - it had covered up markings identical to the oem. Same goes for other tourmax parts I got. Paid 60 € for this one. There was nothing wrong with the original but replaced it and have a spare now. My way to have a minter with over 80k km ;)

My final take on tourmax: OEM - parts for comparable low price.

Just had a look at tourmax units.  76.78GBP delivered, so thats 153 AUD. Mick Hone quoted me 241aud delivered, so tourmax is a great price.   They quote the suzuku part no's too, which is great.

Feedback: installed the Ultimate Rectifier mosfet one and all is in spec. Time will tell if they are good, anyway has 3 years guarantee. Happy for now. Don´t know if it was my sensation but cold idle seems to be a slight higher. Once in a while had to adjust especially now in Winter.
