Title: Turn down streetlights at night to help emissions
Post by: VladTepes on Thursday, 22 August 2024, 03:24 PM
Yeah, really.

They've done a trial in Canberra (because where else) and concluded that if you turn down the brightness of the streetlights at night you can
1. See more of the sky
2. Reduce electricity use (so reduce carbon emissions)

Now while nobody can dispute those findings are they missing the big fucking picture here?

Turn down the streetlights at night....  when you need to see shit like pedestrians when you are driving, which is the point of the lights.    :frustrated:

Great idea Vlad, carbon emissions must be controlled. I really think our forum should help.We need to lead the way, someone to perfect a drop in electric motor for our 14, we can all get rid of that stupid petrol thing that they come with.Your very clever Vlad, back to you.

The switch to LED street lights over here reduced light pollution quite a lot as they are more directional. That's a good thing as we can see the sky again.
TBH the carbon myth can bugger off, but the cheaper running costs as they use less electric is good for our taxes.

My 14 has two electric motors Grog. One occasionally spins a fan & the other excites that petrol lump you mention.

I grew up in Canb, we used to call the place Duckberg, well I still do actually, "the Berg" for short as I still ride there often as I'm only 75Ks away.
Anyway, there are a lot of street lights in that place.

But do you not find that they are so directional and far apart that you can honestly miss people in the dark. I also find that when it rains at night the street lights are awful. I have a section where its all tree lined the side the lights are on and a large embankment on the other side of the road. If someone is walking along that pavement with the trees and LED's, I honestly dont see them until they stand directly under the light. I'm all for new tech for saving money and the earth but, IMHO, the new led street lights are deadly for pedestrians.

I don't even have street lights but the bastards still charge me the full council tax.  :furious:

I've known some like that, the newer ones abut don't seem to have that issue for me though.
