What part of the trail?
The military road between Khe Sanh and Phong Nha called Ho Chi Minh Tay (west) - about 230km of concrete perfection is not to be missed. This is what I wrote in 2012 after my first (of 9) visit:

Day 25 Khe Sanh to Phong Nha ~250 km and about 100 metres of that was straight!!!
Picture this in your mind:
A 10 to 12 foot wide ribbon of concrete, 230 km long, no traffic (well almost), perfect bends, the most spectaular scenery you could want, mountains, lush triple canopy forest, huge palms, cow sh*t everywhere, dipping and diving down valleys and rising seemingly forever until you crest yet another high pass - sometimes in the clouds, past dozens of waterfalls and crossing so many bridges, I lost count. This was definitely one of the best roads I have ever ridden.
I said to Mrs SB when we finally levered our bums out of the saddles, "If I'd done that in a car, I'd be in tears by now!" I kid you not.
Buy your ticket to Vietnam NOW and ride Ho Chi Minh Trail West as soon as you can.

I've ridden about 30,000 km the length and breadth of Vietnam, mostly on 2 wheels, so if you have any questions, fire away.
A taste of traffic in Hanoi's old quarter
Cheers, Seb
16 days Hanoi to Ho chi min along the trail , how much it follows it I am not that sure
