Title: Lighter Bike
Post by: grog on Monday, 12 August 2024, 06:28 PM
Just pondering on a bike a bit lighter than 14. Not sure i could ever sell 14, just part of me. Researching, i like reports and looks of SV 650. Any knowledge, comments etc? Of course a Yoshi can would be fitted. Tail tidy also

I rode one once, seemed quite fun. Pretty small & narrow though, hence a lot of lasses ride them.

Not much of a review but I only did about 5 miles on it.

My wife had an SV for 6 years and she could not fault it, although I had up rated the suspension to suit her weight and fitted braided hoses.  If it had of been physically bigger we would probably still have it but it was too small for me.  Have you had a look at the gsx800s, that's a cracking bike.

I enjoy riding the GSX-8S, punchy little twin that handles okay, great as solo bike but limited luggage space, 202kg wet. It seems a popular bike too so accessories should be abundant. Best mod would be upgrading the suspension.
For comfort and everyday it cannot match the GSX1400, Mrs Batty was not impressed with the GSX-8S seat at all!

Any of the GSXS1000's from naked to GT. They're quite lightweight low seat height nimble & shitloads of power 🙀

Since retiring, have started dumbell exercises, maybe 14 will feel light weight soon.  Yeah , will go to Suzuki shop, ride a few. Last time i did that, was so glad to get back on on my old 14 for ride home.Same day i did snag a ride on MV Brutale, thats forever in my memory banks, cannot be forgotten.  13,000 rpm

Seems the decision is made mate.  You only live once, life's too short and all that jazz.

I used to think the 1402 was a big heavy bike, then I got my Bavarian Mistress (BMW K1300GT SE), she's quite the large lass standing still. After riding that it made the 1402 feel like my Triumph 675 Daytona...

Eric, Brutale amazing but just doesnt fit me, very cramped. Yesterday missed out on SV, 3 yrs old, 700ks. He bought it, got sick. Sold under $6g,almost got a bargain.

Shame, another will come along mate. I looked at them when I was stepping up from my 250 Bandit, but chose a Triumph Daytona instead

Might cost more than an SV650 but if you get a chance ride a Honda CB400 (aka Super-Four) do it.
They are no  longer available new (to my knowledge) but a 2017 model with ABS can be had affordably. I happen to mention that model because there is an owner's 2 year review here:
https://www.reddit.com/r/motorcycles/comments/cpd3y7/honda_cb400_super_four_2_year_ownership_review/

Me? I rode it and really enjoyed it. Has power for two up (not 1400 power obviously but adequate) and has than in line 4 feel we love.

I know of a good CB1200 - for $3,500.

ALMOST as good as an XJR1300 which is ALMOST as good as GSX1400...

I had a gen 2 SV (pointy as they sometimes call them) for a number of years. Loved that thing. With a few suspension tweaks it was light, nimble, planted, engine had character and more than quick enough for the roads where I live and my ability. Only real reason for selling it (other than wanting to try something different) was that my girls were riding pillion more and more, the SV pillion accomodations are not that great and I came across a good deal on one of my dream bikes :)

My lighter bike answer. Rode a few, nothing matched or nowhere near my old trusty 14.I bought a pair of 5kg dumbells, been using most days. Now my 14 feels much lighter, problem solved.Todays ride was a bit of a quick squirt, my reward for effort😎

Correct answer to the lighter bike question Grog :salute:

Personally for me the 14 is a light bike.

Was in a rehab clinic (2010) for a slipped disc. Head doc told me that the only thing to do about the sorry state of my entire spine was to strengthen the muscles. I was so weak that I was not able to participate in the full programme.

Took another, very extended rehab clinic vaccation in 2012 to get me on the road to health. 2013 joined a fitness center and did my thing there for 2 years. Then set up my own garage gym. Pretty basic stuff. Power Cage, a very good bar, lots of plates, a small array of additional stuff.

Complemented by walking and a much improved nutrition, I am now in the best overall shape in my life. Still much room for improvement. One baby step at a time. Consistancy beats intensity in the long run. Hard to change all areas at once. So pick one, work on it for a while before addressing the next.

When putting the 14 on the main stand, I have to remind myself to be gentle when doing so :happy1:

Your effort is huge compared to mine Andre. Im happy with my results but im not challenging you to an arm wrestle.

I'll vote for that too, 14s aren't that heavy. Mind you I've had mine so long anything smaller like my Hornet feels like a BMX. 14s also hold their weight quite low so don't topple over as quick as other bikes. My Sprint was lighter but felt a lot heavier as it was so top heavy.

That "huge effort" is just the result of many, many baby steps. Taking this in long-stride-mode leads you into the physiologic "devil's kitchen"; exhausting you physically as well as mentally. Imo, overdoing it explains why the vast majority of people having a contract with a fitness center quit going there while their contract isn't over for a long time.

As long as you are happy with the results and keep doing it, you are on the right track.  :onya:

Well done Grog.  I've posted before that I used to think the 1400 was heavy until I got my BMW. The Bavarian Mistress is an Aircraft carrier compared to our 1400's

Hmm not sure I agree with your there Eric - my R1250GS is not that much heaver than a GSX1400 - we are talking about 15Kg - and with the boxer engine it has the weight more at the bottom than the 14 does. Personally I've found it about the same to put on the mainstand as I did my old GSX1400.

Both are still damn heavy though!

Correct, K1300GT transverse 4 65deg slant motor 166bhp shaft drive, with top box and panniers full load of fuel she's about 265kg. Makes the 1400 feel like my Daytona 675.

Never ridden a GS, only an F and that was rubbish.
