Title: Rear grab handle -respray
Post by: ciaran on Tuesday, 18 June 2024, 06:26 AM
Hi folks

Planning on respraying the rear grab handle on my K3 as it's a bit scratched up and need some words of wisdom!

..Was going to sand with P600 first and was wondering do I need to remove all the old paint, or just have a smooth surface to start with ?

Next would be primer and base coat, sand again with P2000 before clear coat - does this sound about right ?

I'm not much of a painter, but I know prep is the key to a good job. If you can get a good enough surface without going to bare Aluminium, I'd say it'll be fine.
Your process itself sounds right to me too, I'd do it that way. . .

@Del is a real good painter of 1400 bits, haven't seen him for a while though.

For primer, I'd use a coat or 2 of etch primer myself, as the paint usnt that thick, and it's likely you'll expose bare aluminium.

Alternately don't sand down, but remove all the paint and get it mirror polished, no worries ever again with scratches then.

Mine is polished but needs redoing, on my previous xjr I had the grab handle Aerocoated, chrome effect powdercoat, however it did start to rub though to the black undercoat fairly quickly. If you do spray it yourself how much use will it get 🙈
