Anyone on here had heart surgery? Long story short, had an heart attack, and during stay in cardiac hospital, turns out I have two leaking heart valves (severe) looks like I need opening up. Have a smaller Suzuki 650 which gets used most now. 14 is virtually laid up. Has anybody gone through similar? I'm wondering about fitness and strength post op. I'm 60 13.5 stone 5/11. Lost 2.5 stone whilst in hospital. Sadly I'm contemplating the unthinkable and letting the 14 go. My worry is being post op and cannot handle the weight. I'm hoping I'll be ok, but my worry is I'm not, and stuffed as I cannot handle the bike.
Any thoughts on similar situations would be appreciated, many thanks.
Ride safe everyone and happy new year to you all.
BB
I'd keep the 14 & find out how it goes. Gives you a target to aim for in the recovery as well.
For what it's worth I know a bloke with 3/4s of an artificial heart & he's ridden everything from Pan Euros to HDs & still rides HDs damn quickly.
Thanks Hooli, you've given me food for thought...
With the valves fixed you should feel a lot better! In the short term, of course, you'll have to recover from the surgery.

youll be right mate, it will give you a target. Dont sell the 14, youll regret it.
I had similar thoughts after 3 heart attacks and now 4 stents - not the level of intervention that you are up against. Nevertheless, it did make me concerned about the level of fitness to 'work' a bike hence I sold my GS and kept the 14 - I have 5 other smaller bikes that do not need the level of grunt to ride. Now with good blood flow and a level of fitness that does not impede me, I find the 14 'easy' to ride and the seat height perfect to maintain control for my size 5' 11" inside leg 32".
So like others have said, one step at a time but if you are like me with the ticker in fine fettle I'm sure you'll wonder why you worried. And! with luck and modern surgical methods, it might all be key hole. Above all chin-up! :hat:
Stan
Firstly Basil don't make any rash decisions about selling your GSX please.
My wife Bobbie had an infected heart valve in 2012 and had open heart surgery to replace it.
Her recovery was good and she started going to the gym. Met a power lifter and trained with them. She now holds World Records for her age & weight in all three lifts ie bench press, squat and deadlift. So your mindset will determine the outcome my friend.
Good luck 🍀 with all your health issues. Wishing you a speedy recovery 🙏
concur with everyone else, having a knee Op next week ! (not ticker probs I know but you do start to wonder ?)
I can't imagine having to sell my 14,hate the thought !!!
Recover first and see how you are, think Pos as my wife says !!!!! :hat:
After both spinal and heart surgery, one year after the other some 13 years ago, I too was concerned - especially after the spinal surgery as they told me it could be 2 years to fitness. The determination to not let it do so, meant I was back on my 14 (that I owned then) after 7 months. Took it out of me, but I did it. Heart surgery - whilst there is still a recovery period - is much more controlled and quicker, the programs which hospitals offer post surgery really help you to get back on your feet quite quickly - a matter of months to get back to full fitness. Whilst I now have to be careful riding a motorcycle because of my spinal situation, my heart situation has never concerned me, mainly because my GP calls me in once a year for a general check over since in respect of what was my heart condition.
What I'm saying Brian is don't be too hasty to sell the 14. Have the surgery, go through the fitness recovery (walking is a great tool for that and in Yorkshire you have some fantastic walking country) and then make your decision. Whilst it all sounds grim, procedures these days are much less invasive and debilitating, you'll feel fantastic when its all over, trust me.
Not me but a Mate. Huge heart surgery around 25 yrs ago. He owns/runs tow truck business and caravan park, he just never stops. If you end up with 1/2 his energy Basil youll need another 14👍👍
Many thanks for all the positive suggestions. The 14 at the moment is (you will be pleased to hear) going nowhere quickly. I only did 260 miles last year, and the vast majority were before the problem started. When it kicked off at one point I was given two weeks to live, unless I went straight to cardiac unit. Since then it's a struggle as my fitness has nosedived.
Onwards and upwards so they say. I'm in the system and all the exploratory tests have pointed to surgery. The less invasive the better.
Thanks once again, my missus also says keep the 14. I'm grateful I've got the 650 though.
All the best,
Brian/BB

Any update Col ? 🙏
Yes Chris, I cannot have pushed the post button. Sorry. So the surgery went well, they did a quadruple bypass. I'm sitting up and walking with a frame. All being well heading home Monday or Tuesday. No bike riding in the immediate future. They sure are clever buggers.
Hats off to them :hat:
So Happy for ya Col, glad it went well👍👍
Cheers grog....now if the blood sugar would just come down I'd be a lot happier.
4 new pipes, wow, you'll sound like Notty! :happy1:
Glad they got you sorted mate, you'll be back on the bike eventually. Hope Mrs KF takes good care of you when you get home.

Fabulous staff at the hospital, first class people.
Great you're home Col, no tennis or night aerobics for a while mate, get better first.
Great that you are back home Col, onwards and upwards to a full recovery :onya:
All the best for a speedy recovery
I know a couple of friends who have had similar operations & say that they can't believe how good they feel after the initial recovery period, although they didn't feel particularly bad before it had made them realise how much things had become harder to do
Cheers, Pete
Quadruple eh :hat:
I guess with four new open arteries you'll be running much smoother hopefully 🙏
Diabetes is a bugger of a thing, perhaps a better blood flow will assist 🙄
I think everyone on here
all wish you a speedy recovery mate
Thanks guys. It's been an eye opener. Originally I thought just stent or maybe two at the time of the angiogram and I'd be brand new. So you can imagine my surprise when they said I required bypass surgery. Then to come out of surgery with a quadruple was a real shock.
No one event ever sat me on my knees but it was like a wall I could not get through . My first complaint to my GP was that i felt like i needed a bigger set of lungs. Sometimes I'd have to sit down after walking from my front door to my workshop a distance of only 50 metres. To be on the recovery side of the surgery is great yet I understand there is still a way to go, that is up to me doing as I'm told and being smart about about not overdoing things.
The support I have received has been huge, my wife has been incredible. My motorcycle mates have put me in a great frame of mind leading up to surgery. Now it's time to take it easy and recover. Our goals remain the same and our hope is to rebook our trip to Europe, not this year but next.
Our hope is to shake hands with a bunch of you and put faces to the names of those that have expressed to me their best wishes.
Onwards and upwards mate thanks for sharing the update.
Col, so happy for ya,many new roads to travel now👍
Good on ya Col, glad you're on the mend & have great support at home.
When you are up to it Col (and with your GP's nod), some gentle walking will help your recovery. I started with just a few hundred yards and gradually built up to a few miles each day - really helped with the circulation, getting things working and with the fitness as well. Plus I found some great walks to do.
Just take it easy, don't rush things and in no time at all you'll feel great :onya: :onya:
They'd like me to walk 30 mins a day. I will try to achieve that but cannot manage just at the moment. Does having a shave count towards my 30 mins ?
If you're so unsteady on your feet you keep shuffling I'd say that counts as walking cause your feet are moving.
Quote from: Kiwifruit on Friday, 02 February 2024, 06:07 AMThey'd like me to walk 30 mins a day. I will try to achieve that but cannot manage just at the moment. Does having a shave count towards my 30 mins ?
I started with a walk around the garden (its not a big garden mind) after my surgery and that wore me out the first time I did it. Just added a few steps extra each day, and then around the block where we live - just don't push it, know your limits!

I'll call it the slow shoe shuffle Hooli :onya:
I'm lapping the garden Dave, wifey had to cut the grass so I didn't get lost. Summer and hot here so only doing early morning and evening. I'm happy with progress.
Well done Col, keep at walking. After prostate, i was hopeless. First 500 metre walk i couldnt get home, had to flag a car down. I then decided golf course was 6000 metres, my aim. In two weeks i was doing that distance every day. Then came the other can i do its, just picked them off one by one. Lifting, bending etc.The old body is pretty resilient, i now out do some of the young lazy pricks at work. Stretching, pilates exercises are great tools. Youll be right. 👍
Hoping to get a good report from my GP tomorrow.
Went for a drive with the bride for a change of scenery this evening. I was stuffed when we got back. I do feel a small improvement each day which is promising. Small steps.
Good one mate.
Just been admitted back into hospital. I have an infection in the wound on my left leg where they took one of the arteries from. So now on IV antibiotics. Bit of a set back but I'm in the best place :onya:
Bugger, those post op infections can be a real bastard - ask me how I know . . . as you say, you're in the best place to fix it, best wishes Col.
Old age - enlarged prostate op today , green laser apparently, thankfully benign :bugga:
Not Notty problem Notty, youll be fine. Im now 11 yrs clear, mine was cancer, a few things change, life often does. Any advice needed PM me.

No Thai nurses here - maybe as it's a private hospital? All local girls - £7K a lot of cash or wait 2 more years for NHS - could have bought another bike !! :)
Lot of cash Notty. My choices were $70 k one bloke in private, I chose another, $30k in private, he offered to do same in public, all free. Just in a room of 6 after, not caring as drugged out. They are robbers, drive Ferraris and live in mansions. 😡
Pleased I havn't to pay for my surgery. Looks like I'm in over the weekend at least while they sort out my leg infection. United Nations of nurses here, they're all great.
Are you in Tauranga Hospital Col?
Yes Col. At least it's easy for the boss. 10 mins from home.
Yep. I know you're in the best place, but if it were me, I'd chaffing at the bit to escape, I really detest having to stay in hospital.
I'll have a couple  for ya, seeing as how you can't.
I don't mind being here mopping up the antibiotics. Diabetes and infections enjoy each other's company.

All went well . urine a lovely shade of red and like pissing through razor blades but pressure now I could beat you all at pissing up the wall - surgeon started off with green laser but after 30 minutes had to change to Turps ( Heated wire loop ) as my tissue was too tough apparently. Had my dreams realised when I was offered a bed bath!! Dave washed my bits whilst Nigel did my backside - bugger not what I hoped for. Anyway, all looks benign but compared to what you have been through no comparison - more people seen my bits last 2 days than the last 68 years :rofl2: :rofl2:
Well done Notty, new friends also found, amazing how life works. Pissing is easy, the stopping the hard part.
Well done Notty, good news :onya:
Modesty and privacy all head out the window when you just can't do it yourself.
Yes the pretty young nurses just flit along asking you those intimate questions like..... have your bowels moved today ?
Still in hospital with my leg infection but seem to be making good progress. Been in long with the infection than for the surgery. At least I'm in the right place.

Hopefully all recover well and get back to the bikes ASAP.
Father always said to me "avoid hospitals at all cost - to many people die there"
Get out as fast as you can Col!
Agreed Stan!
I'm trying to get gone. Been a bit arduous back in hospital. I could not fight my infection without the specialist care I'm receiving. My forty years as a type 1 diabetic leaves me vulnerable to infection. Doctor's turned up now so going to post this.
Thanks again for your best wishes.
Get well Col, bit of paw paw ointment on infection, maybe Docs have better. Cant wait for some more Kiwi ride reviews 👍👍
Still in hospital but as I've said, it's the best place for me at present.
The care is first class, the food lacks any class. So I'm slimming !!
Don't want to bore you with my medical issues but here's a little story you type 1 diabetics will understand.
I normally take my long acting insulin about 9 pm each evening. I was really tired and thought I'll do my insulin now..... well I gave myself 30 units of fast acting insulin. I was drowsy and used the wrong insulin pen. Normal blood sugars are between 4-10 m/ml. The amount of insulin I gave myself was enough to reduce my blood sugar by 60 m/ml. Thus started a very stressful 4 hours. Anyway I came right but it was quite a scare. Have been the talk of the ward since then. Lesson learned.
:happy1: They'll keep you in longer if ya go doing stuff like that,
He's doing it for the attention, obviously attractive nurses there.
All they do is fill you up with glucose injections Hooli..... no mouth to mouth resuscitation involved.

Thats funny Col, mozzies or Hardlys, not sure which has biggest population here. Im sure open pipe Harleys have amplifiers fitted. My tri oval has end baffle out, asked Wife how loud i am compared to screamin eagle neighbours, she reckons no comparison, even said it sounds nice. Those others just sound stupid. 👍👍

My B/W has a Tri Oval with the baffle removed, sounds fine, the black has a 30cm (or 35) Delkevic straight through carbon can, that's definitely a bit louder, although it's fine whilst riding, ya get a nice howl at throttle roll on.

Have a mate been in |Hosp since last August, went in to Wgton for Gall bladder, they nicked the bowel and he got infected, has lost 20 kg and been lying there since but coming right slowly !!!!!! Fit guy and is now a mess ......
Yes Roo you do hear of the odd faux pax in hospital.
Sorry to hear about your mate. Hope you get your knee sorted Pronto.
Faux pax in hospitals, maybe few more than we hear about, none for you Kiwi, home soon.
Home :boogie:
Great news👍👍
Pleased for ya mate, much rather be at home than in there. Feet up & let the pampering begin . . .
Well it's nearly six weeks since my surgery and it hasn't been easy. Spent six days in hospital, home for a week then another twelve days on IV antibiotics back in Tauranga Hospital getting an infection sorted in my leg where they took one of the arteries from. It looks like a shark bit me now, got the district nurse dressing it every two days. Just for fun I now have fluid on my lungs. Can barely walk a dozen steps. So I'm a Grumpy little puppy at present. Mate is coming up next week to start the bike for me.....so at least I'll be able to listen to it !!
Hope your knee op went a bit smoother and you're on the mend Roo :onya:
That's good news Col.
Take care with fluids on the lungs. My 89yo Dad has COPD & is very susceptible to pneumonia.
A bad run Col. On a better road from here on👍👍
Fluid on ya lungs? How did you get that? Is it a post op side effect? More importantly, how do ya get rid of it? Handstands?

Really sorry to hear about your heart issues. Recovering from heart surgery can be a bit unpredictable, but don't throw in the towel on riding just yet. Take it easy, listen to your body, and see how you feel as you bounce back.
No, not giving up on riding. Just the recovery is going to be a bit slower than I anticipated.
Going to need to do some physio as muscle tone has gone on holiday. Have lost 12kg in 6 weeks.
I've a few spare Kilos you're welcome to Col . . . :happy1:

12 weeks on and the jam tart seems to be working well. Been doing rehab at the hospital once a week which I enjoy. The wound left in my leg by the infection is getting better slowly. That is the real restriction to riding as they want my leg to be elevated.
Wanted to go to the Supercars practice today in Taupo but couldnt get a leave pass from the district nurse. :cry2:
Will fire up the bike this weekend so she doesnt think shes totally forgotten
Good to hear mate, the resting up because of the leg would also be helping the heart recovery I'd say.
So your district nurse, is she a young, nubile, eager to please Filipina type or more ya Nurse Gladice Emanual? :happy1:
