Hi guys, first of all, a great thank you for all the knowledge and awesome contributions to this forum. Despite now writing a lot I come here often to seek knowledge. I´ve had my K5 since 2013 and for the last few years it´s been the only bike and a great all-rounder. Not letting it go in the foreseeable future. Quite a lot of people ask me if it´s new, so pristine I keep it.
The other stuff I wanted opinion on is, always ran with 100% synthetic oil. No problem whatsoever, 48k km´s. Should I change for semi or keep it 100%?
Great your enjoying it all .
It the folk that make this place the best o the Internet.
I'd never criticise what oil folk want to put in there bike but with 4000 mile service intervals and that motor being designed to use semi synthetic motorcycle oil its just a bit of a waste of money that I much prefer to spend on petrol
I really don't want to get drawn into a semi vs full syn oil discussion, but here's my 2c worth.
The GSX1400 engine was made to run using 10w40 semi. Suzuki could have specified full syn if it needed it or if it would benefit from using it, but they didn't. These engines run perfectly well for a couple of hundred thousand of kilometers using the specified oil and oil changes. Full syn doesn't make it run any better, doesn't make it last longer, doesn't make it wear less, it's just a different oil that you can use if you want. It's not going to be 'better' for the engine in any way, just a different & more expensive oil. The use of Full syn over semi is just a personal choice, hell, I know some folk (@Snapey) have run 15w40 diesel oil in the GSX with excellent results for smoothness, wear and cleanliness.
10w40 semi is ubiquitous and there's bound to be some brand on special somewhere whenever you want some, or buy a stock of your favourite brand when it's cheap so you have it on hand when it's needed (I do) Most folk tend to buy the same brand over & over, same as the viscosity, buy the same as was in there. If you want to keep using full syn & you're happy with how the engine is & paying for it, go right ahead, but you're not 'improving' or 'being more kind' to the engine because of it. Yes you can change back to semi with no drama if you want.
Kiwicol I was trying to say the same with the same cabiats.
each to their i but didn't put it as well as you .
Same not wanting to redstart the what oil is best debate yet again .
Always used semi 10/40... all good
Use what you like, most consumables are very good.Seals, air filters and bearings, big diff in quality of them.
I'd say swap to semi. Only because we've known a few bikes starting to smoke due to valve stems seals or the pairs seals going & most of them seem to have been run on fully synth. My guess is the seals need the mineral part of the oil to keep them supple.
Thanks for all the answers. Been elucidated.
