Title: Almost back on a 14.....but still looking!
Post by: Gaz1978 on Tuesday, 12 December 2023, 07:54 AM
So it's been a while guys.....5 years in fact! However I still miss the GSX14! Currently I have my ZZR1400 which is a great back imo.  So if I can find the right one I'm looking for a Suzuki14 stable mate for the Kawa14  :8:

I did go and look at a Silver 04 plate one today, which I thought I'd be purchasing. 27k miles, 2 owners, and £2850. Now I wasn't expecting a showroom model at that price, and am more than happy (and expecting) to do some fettling on one over the winter, but this one was just rough 😳. Forks all pitted on the chrome, casings really corroded, engine corroded, fork seal leaking, but what really put me off was the frame rust....really bad 👎.

If I'd of bought it I would of been wanting to fully strip and repaint frame but tbh not sure I want to be going that far (to be fair if someone wanted a work horse its probably an OK bike). Think I've been spoilt in that my GSX from 5 years back was immaculate but I know I can't expect to buy a cheaper one in the same condition.....but I'll keep looking!

So hopefully I'll be back on another soon guys 😉👍

Yeah at that price it was always going to be rough mate.
You were wise to avoid a rusty frame.

Hope your search goes well.

I bought my 05 for less than that with a complete set of Givi luggage but the 100k on clock puts everyone off.

100K on the clock is barely run in on these bikes!
It's all about condition not mileage. A well look after 100K bike is always a better option than a 30K bike that's been sitting decaying, or worse being abused.

You don't  need to tell most people on there that, I have one with 100k and the other 165k in your scale. But when you come to sell they still don't want the high mileage.

Totally agree. High mileage wears out stuff that can be replaced. Neglect just wrecks things, a one way road to the scrap heap.

They may be advertised at that, but are they really selling at that price? Be interesting to know how long those have been "in stock", they look quite over-priced to me.

You can search sold prices on eBay and they are much less than people think and hope for .

Interestingly the GSX1400 values here in Oz (not sure about NZ) are strong compared with the UK.

Prices have went up since I left 5 years ago, I would have been lucky to get 5K for my K7 back then.

Well bike Number3 was lined up to view this week, a 2001 K2. Sounded like just what I'm after, reasonable mileage at 22k, needed a little tlc in way of casings/fork lowers etc, but mechanically was good. £3k for the bike plus it had a few little extras like renthals, MTC cans etc. Anyway.....did a hpi check to be on safe side and its on register as stolen, but not recovered  :whatever:  Spoke to owner and he says 5 years ago it was wheeled away from his property and the thieves had cut up ignition wires to try and hot start it but obviously couldn't get it going, and left it 150yds away from his house which was discovered 1.5 days after it got nicked.

So looks like I'm passing on it again. Maybe if it was showing as "recovered" I may of considered it, but fact its still down as stolen then I don't want any grief! Back to the search

Hoping to try and find something closer to £3k that needs a bit of fettling I can do over winter......prices are a bit steep still though

Just ring the Plod non-emergency number & ask them how it's recorded with them.

Mine is recorded as stolen/recovered after scum took it from work a few year ago, I've never bothered to HPI it to see how it's recorded though. I did phone plod to ask if they had it as recovered before I took it out on the road again after recovery, just in case.

Thinking of selling my 2001 K2 in Blue & White, 28K miles, absolutely mint condition and almost standard (other than clear indicator lenses, LED rear light, Pyramid Hugger, Stainless radiator guard & a small screen all of which are functional & can be either removed or replaced with the original items)

I have owned the bike since Aug/Sept 2018, it has been kept in a dry garage and used as and when I had a bit of time, it has been maintained by me (former mechanic) to a very high standard with regular oil changes etc, last winter it had a rear end overhaul in swing-arm bearings checked & greased, new SKF rear wheel bearings, new SKF sprocket carrier bearings, new HD chain & JT Sprockets, front & rear wheels resprayed the correct white & a pair of Pirelli Angel tyres purchased & fitted. The winter before it had a similar overhaul to the front end & recently I have fitted a set of genuine Suzuki stainless down-pipes as the original chrome ones had started to deteriorate but they are still in my garage and can go with the bike if required

I have pampered this bike, and have spent a fair bit but more so spent a lot of time to keep her looking and running/riding at 100%. Each time I'm out on it, it draws attention wherever I am parked up with numerous comments from fellow bikers and the general public regarding its condition, it surprises me that some even think it is a brand new bike - it really is that clean

So the downside, it took me a long time to find a standard genuine K2 that hadn't been hacked or messed about with, as soon as I viewed this bike I knew she was the one! After purchasing I found out that she had previously around 2006 been a CAT D deemed not economical to repair - I was slightly annoyed that the seller had not informed me, I tried to find out more details but failed so took the bike to a local motorbike engineer to be inspected just for peace of mind and he gave it a clean bill of health and found no faults including checking the frame etc for defects, she has never failed an MOT and has only ever had one advisory in 2006 showing a cracked mudguard (must have been replaced before I purchased) so assume that had something to do with the classification

Apart from the CAT D this would be a £5K bike in the current market, I am looking to sell for £3.5K which is what I have been offered last month against a 2017 Z1000SX, The dealer was keen to get the 14 for himself but I found another bike that I preferred and purchased

If you are interested I can answer any questions and send additional pictures, not sure I want to sell and know that I will regret it but could do with the space & getting earache from the Mrs!! I have been on here for a long time and wouldn't offer the bike if I thought it had any problems

Cheers, Pete
