Title: Ignition conversion
Post by: Joseph on Monday, 18 September 2023, 12:44 AM
Hi

In view of fully converting my 1400 engine to Bandit 1200 ancillaries (36mm CV carbs and basic ECU igntion) I started with the electrical side of things.

Photos over the internet seem to show that the ignition plate and pick up are the same between the ancient Carbed oil cooled engines and modern the EFI1400

Comparing both parts once the ignition covers removed confirmed that.

Slight difference obviously on the rotor side of things, EFI needing many more pick up points for some reason :

Also, there is a thickness difference, that i need to catch up.

Fatter bike, fatter rotor ?

But the Bandit rotor otherwise will swap over easily, same ID and OD on the shaft

I checked at TDC the T ignition mark of the rotor on both engines in order to compare whats going on.

Turns out the 1400 is slightly later on the mark than the 1200.

I'm guessing that if i line up the bandit rotor fitted to the 1400 at the same setting as the 1200, using the 1200 ECU should mean i'll be sparking the engine as if it was a massive bore bandit engine

In any case any fine tuning required can be achieved with this part, i've designed these and had a few made, they're compatible with all Oil cooled suzuki engines, and allow precise +5 to -5 advance settings :

That should do the trick, if any adjustment is needed at all

Sorry for being a complete and utter moron, but what advantages (if any) will you get by converting the engine to run with carbs etc?

Apart from that, love the plate you've designed ... I take it the little pointers are for -5, 0 and +5, simple but effective  :clapping:

All the best ... Barry

Bandit system conversion allows me to get the engine running more easily, for what knowledge i have in mechanics

All i got was the bare engine, it's lacking at least a loom, ECU, throttle bodies, compatible fuel pump, sensors, inlet pipes etc.  Cost for all that is higher than using what Bandit parts i already have on the shelf give or take

I can supply the ignition plate for anyone wishing to fine tune their engine.

Indeed +5 0 -5 are those little nibs. I did a negative range for turbocharging setups, which i will be needed
