Title: What To Do?
Post by: BanditsHigh on Monday, 04 September 2023, 07:56 PM
Soooo, my current 14 (K4) with 24k on the clock is (I think) about to blow apart (engine wise)!

It's always had a tappy noise on the LHS (shims) but a few months ago it started getting worse, then the other day it suddenly sounded like bits'n'pieces were rattling around the top end (loudly) ... it's serious whatever it is.

So the choices I have ...

1) Try and repair engine, but it sounds terminal (might have a look at the top end if I can manage it).

2) Get my original K3 running again (7 years since it ran), then swap the wheels/new tyres, new chain/sprockets and brake calipers/pads from K5 to K3 .... the K3 is in very rough shape, but I can think it can be resurrected (again).

3) Get another engine for the K5 and fit that. Both bikes have a full Akra system, but the K5 is running a stock airbox/filer ... I can fit the individual air filters and Power Commander III from the K3 to the K5 while I'm at it.

4) Buy another bike ... there are quite a few very tidy examples out there (including on the forum), but I really can't afford £4k-£5k ... although that's never stopped me before.

My main issue is my health or should I say lack of it, due to heart attacks, cardiac arrest and now heart failure! I basically medically retired myself and I'm living (scraping by) on my private pension at the moment.

I very very quickly run out of energy doing the simplest of things, but can still manage to swap wheels, change tyres etc, but it takes me forever to do it ... but at least I still can :)

The simplest (for now) route is to buy a new bike and it'll probably last me for the rest of my life. I'm now 57 and not sure how many more years I have left, but I'll enjoy them as best I can. That would give me transport again very quickly and then there's nothing to stop me trying to fix the other bikes and maybe selling them (who needs three 14s).

I'm not doing a lot of mileage these days as I don't need to and can't afford to, so whatever bike I eventually ride, the mileage isn't going to increase a lot (mind you my K3 is at 103k miles).

Oh what to do  :frustrated:

All the best ... Barry

P.S. Over the years I've kinda avoided K5 and onwards due to the immobiliser, in case it breaks etc ... anyone had any major problems with it?

Hi Barry,
Sorry to hear about your health problems.
Bikes are a great distraction.
I've only had my K7 for a year and 10,700 miles now.
Not a single problem with the immobiliser ( touching wood).

Best wishes,

Simon

Start cheap and work up till it hurts, whip the rocker cover (Why is it still called that?) off and take a look inside first.

Aye I'd look inside, I doubt it's major on these lumps. Maybe a stuck cam chain adjuster so that's slack. Or as others have said a broken reed valve in the PAIRs if still fitted.

As for swapping engines between frames, remember the K3 & K5 have different looms, ECUs & ignition switches (for the immobiliser, so top yoke too) which would all need swapping too if you're putting the PC3 over to keep the original tune the PC3 is mapped against (the early bikes run rich, later bikes run lean so putting a PC3 mapped for a later bike on an early ECU will make it very very rich).

My GSX14, Gen-2 Busa, Gen-3 Busa, B-King, previous H2 all have / had immobilisers. Very rare for them to be an issue.

Only issue may be if you lost both keys?
I recently had a spare cut cut and coded for one of my bikes. Sure it was a little more expensive than a non-chipped key, but it shouldn't be a regular occurrence and I like the extra bit of security.

Smart keys / ignition immobilisers are the norm now. It's not often that folk think they are a bad thing.

Later 04- bikes also means you can use stuff like Woolich ECU access, I don't think it's listed for earlier models.

See this getting old crap, I forgot I'd made this post

First off all, it's a K4 not a K5 (I'm a plonker), but yes I'd need to swap looms as well, but after swapping an engine that'd be easy.

1) PAIRS valves are fine
2) Had a very quick look at top end, chain is still there, cam lobes on the outer end look good, didn't go as far as removing caps
3) Clutch is still in one piece
4) Alternator rotor is still attached

I might try removing the plugs to see what it sounds like when not running. I had big end bearings go before on a GSX750 (a long time ago) and the vibes were pretty bad, this doesn't feel the same.

The noise is horrendous and I can only think of being the big ends ... I had an oil leak due to one of the head oil drain tubes being rusted through, so between top ups the oil might have got low ... basically I fecked up.

I've started a resurrection thread where I'm posting about the K3 and the K4

Thanks for the feedback on immobilisers, puts my mind at rest.

All the best ... Barry
