Title: Ive broken my k5
Post by: seth on Monday, 04 September 2023, 12:54 AM
So 1 week after getting hone from a 2500 mile trip round europe the bike stopped charging after 50 miles this weekend .
I know what to check my question is ?
Best place to get a replacement or rewound generator and best supplier for a replacement regulator/rectifier.
Thanks in advance

Hey @seth have a look at this post - may help. I think @Hooli has used them in the past (if not he may have some recommendations). Only thing I recall is that you may have to use the plug off your current generator (I don't think they come with them - you need to check)

I think I used West Country Windings, in Essex (oddly). But it was a few years ago & can't recall for sure.
That not only came with a plug but when I asked them about paying extra for the loom end as mine had burnt out, they just included one for nowt.

That was to rewind my stator. Never needed a reg/rec as my original is still working fine on my low mileage pristine example of a cherished 14.

Found the fault not good at posting pictures on here but the generator had 2 burnt out posts one 1 of the 3 circuit's in the windings .
Been replaced with one from the other bike and all is fine so just need to send the old one away for refurbishment.

You could rewind it yourself, it's a bit of work but quite easy. I did it for my own 14 years ago and it's still working perfectly.

All you need is the correct wire gauge (ENAMELLED COPPER WINDING WIRE) and insulating lacquer and a bit of time and effort. When stripping the old wires off make sure to count the number of windings on a post and when rewinding just do that number of turns for each post.

I followed a guide on www.thegsresources.com, but sadly it no longer exists, but there are plenty of guides on YouTube (for example https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h_FTv-ZCZ4o&t=1s)

All the best ... Barry
