I have 2002 k2 with very noisy starter motor.bike has 5000 miles on with one owner so not a lot of use in 20 plus years.starts fine just excessively noisy.could removing the starter
and lubricating the gear / spigot help does anyone think?
The starter gear inside the engine runs in oil .
Wondering as its done nothing an oil change might just help .
As for the actual sarter motor you could remove it and clean up the brushes and comutator to see if that helps.
it will be hard to tell exactly where the noise is coming from, could be the starter clutch ? lack of use will dry everything out.
G'day Steve & welcome to the nuthouse that is this site
Did I miss your intro ?
:hat:
Is it possible to remove starter and run it ? If starter still noisy problem not in engine and could be starter bearings dried up ? Just a thought

Yes, just hook it up to a 12v source on the bench. It's just an electric motor. You'll have to restrain it though, the torque on these is significant, it will want to flip itself at start. Don't hold it either, it will break your fingers. Clamp it in a vice. I believe they are rebuildable, bearings available at most hardware or bearing suppliers. Blow them out with compressed air to get the carbon dust out. New brushes from an electronics store if they're worn

ive held a few in the past to test them, yeah they do have a bit of a kick when they spin up so you have to have a tight grip on them :whistling: :whistling: ;)
At 5k miles doubt starter motor worn out. More likely starter clutch. Are locating bolts tight?
