I think it was around 1880, which is not old for a Violin..
I suspect it was a repairer that wrote it but who knows..

I suspect that at the time of writing he wasnt really too bothered about the quality of his "penmanship"  :)
We have a very Double Bass in at the moment made in Mittenwald Germany dated 1793, made by Ferdinand Seitz.
We have had even older than that in the past.

Reckon a few 14 parts could be bought for its value. No idea but sounds expensive.

Mr Grog you wouldnt believe what some instruments sell for!
I am in the trade and even I think some prices are just plain bloody ridiculous!!
Not many Ferdinand Seitz Basses have gone through the auctions but the priced fetched seem to be anywhere between £25k - £40k !!!

£25k - £40k... there are bikes that cost more.

The sister of a violinist of the Chicago symphony orchester told me that her violin was 50k US$ in 1990.

Andre you are absolutely spot on..
First sit down then have a read..

https://www.myluthier.co/post/the-5-most-expensive-violins-in-the-world-updated-2022

The Bowed instrument world (Violin, Viola, Cello & Bass) is a bit like the art world when it comes to prices..
For example most people have heard of Leonardo da vinci, Rembrandt or say Michelangelo and know some of these are valued at Millions!
There are many, many paintings by artists that the average person in the street wont have heard of but are worth a LOT of money....
The same is true in the Violin world (Cello & Bass included) in that most will have heard of Stradivarius, Guanari..
The same is true with the Violin world there are many dozens of Makers (Italian, French, German and English that can be worth thousands!
I say can be because like the Art world there are MANY, MANY copies with ficticious labels..
To be honest when we get an instrument in for assesment we usually DO NOT go off the label!
You start to inspect the label after the other clues (Varnish, The making, and if it IS old how the wear patterns look)..Etc..
Talking of wear, that can also be faked..

Ooops I am starting to ramble on..

Anyway you get the idea about how prices can be sky high !
