Title: Europe Trip
Post by: Kiwifruit on Thursday, 15 December 2022, 05:07 PM
So we went to the travel agent today. Leaving New Zealand on the 2nd May. Looking to go to the Usle of Man for practice week from 28th May leaving June 3rd. If anyone has contacts there that runs a B&B or guest house I'd be keen to hear from you. Love to watch some Irish road racing maybe the Southern 100, can't find much in the way of a calender at this stage.
The bride is interested in looking at some of the stately homes and their gardens. I think the Hampton Court Garden Show is on the list.
Be interested in hearing about sights to see. I'd love to go to the Royal Albert Hall for a concert
Will take the boss to see where I grew up in Woodford and Chigwell and where my grandparents lived in Walthamstow and Haverhill. Perhaps catch up with Phil  from there.
Be good to catch with some of you guys that are only familiar to me as text on a screen.
Trying to talk the boss into a bike tour in Europe..
.. not sure how that will pan out. Again any suggestions on areas to see would be helpful. Interested in WW2 history too. Might leave Ukraine out.
Cheers KF

Sounds like a fun trip mate - heading over there myself in May and plan on taking in the TT and the Southern 100 as well as at least one WSBK/MotoGP race in Europe. Maybe a BSB round as well.

For reference, the Southern 100 is another IoM race, but on the Billown course rather than the TT Mountain course, to be held from 10th to 13th July in 2023. https://southern100.com/southern-100/#future (https://southern100.com/southern-100/#future)

The North West 200 is an Irish road race, used by some as a "shakeout run" for the TT, to be held 9th to 13th May in 2023. https://www.northwest200.org/practice-race-schedule/ (https://www.northwest200.org/practice-race-schedule/)

This link has a provisional calendar for the 2023 road racing season you may find useful. https://www.reddit.com/r/RoadRacing/comments/ykc6ip/provisional_road_racing_calendar_for_2023/ (https://www.reddit.com/r/RoadRacing/comments/ykc6ip/provisional_road_racing_calendar_for_2023/)

Enjoy your trip and if you make it to the island give me a hoy!

Mrs is talking about another trip. I haven't seen my family recently.

I tied a few trips in with bike related stuff.

Met Allen Millyard and Zef Eisenberg (RIP) at the Shelsley Hill Climb ( Worlds oldest Motorsport venue?)

Saw Rossi win at Silverstone.

Did the National Motorcycle Museum near B'ham.

We are still thinking about it. After a dozen trips im really getting to a point that I hate the long haul flights, and the exchange rate is pretty bad recently to go to an already expensive country.  Mrs is keener than me, a lot of it is a novelty to her,  I just get a bit sad to see how the country is changing.

You saw Rossi win at Silverstone? My last trip was 2017. I saw him win at Assen! The last Motogp race he ever won. Special for me.
@Chris if you're there ping me. Would be great to catch up again.

You saw Rossi win at Silverstone?

Yeah, 2015.  I was in the main grandstand surrounded by Italians.

Rossi won, Petrucci and Dovizioso were 2nd and 3rd, both on Ducati's. 3 Italian riders and 2 Italian bikes on the podium.  The Italian fans went mental !  One of the best GP moments I've ever seen.

The crowd absolutely loved Rossi, every time he came by everyone was on their feet cheering him on, by far the crowd favourite.   A bloody long and expensive trip from Australia but one I'll never forget.

I've done a dozen trips between Australia and the UK, I used to go once and year or every 18 months. Not so keen now.  The bike scene and buildings / history are way better than here, but I lived there long enough and have seen enough it's not exactly a new experience now, just a very expensive one.

Not knocking anyone who wants to go, there's a lot of stuff that's of interest, I just have other priorities that compete with holidays now.

If I go I'll be due to my wife and my family over there.

You guys seeking for a European tour, check out Portugal! Rarely on the bucket list but the Americans discovered our country a few years ago. All lovely: food, scenery, weather (generally all year riding, at least where I live: Lisbon)and mainly prices. Most known bike related: Concentacao Faro, Moto GP also in the Algarve,... Any tips just ask.

Slightly concerned about all you guys thinking of heading up here at the same time, has anybody considered the effect on the earth's axis?

Seriously though, if I can help in any way with suggestions drop me a PM, or if anyone is passing though the midlands and just wants me to buy them a cup of coffee (assuming I am around) just let me know.

Pete.

@Kiwifruit
Brooklands Motor/Aviation Museum is well worth a visit, if you are including Hampton Court in your travels, it's less than 10 miles away.  https://www.brooklandsmuseum.com/

I used to live local and was a Brooklands Member, my grey modified Morris Minor sitting proudly outsite one of the sheds and posing on the old race track.

Thanks Milts will keep that in mind. Like Col says lovely Morrie. Don't see many two doors these days.

Back in the day we rolled a little Morrie only six of us in it !!
Also ran up the back of a car in Aucklands Queen St while perving at a couple of young lusties walking on the footpath. Easy done aye Hooli. I was a passenger both times I might add.

Talking of Brooklands though, I won an autotest there during the 50th anniversary meet for Spridgets. Part of the course was on the banking so I can truthfully say I've competed on the Brooklands banking & won.

It was made funnier by the bloke who came second having a race tuned 1,275cc Midget & he'd removed the spare for less weight etc before starting the course. I had my mate in the passenger seat & my Jack Russel sat on the shelf behind the seats, all three of us wearing silly hats in a standard 1,500cc Midget & beat him by about 6secs on a course that took me about 47secs. The bloke I beat looked so annoyed  :stir: :whistling:
