Title: Engine Bolts
Post by: Notty on Sunday, 04 September 2022, 08:37 PM
Taking the generator cover off for a polish so will change the bolts at the same time-are Pro Bolt aluminium ok to use? I realise not a good idea to use torque settings  :)

I think you would be better off using SS, cover needs to be oil tight.

Just polish the heads on the originals? Oh and put the washers back in the right place or it'll leak. Top n bottom centre bolts from memory.

Notty, not sure on this one. Just had a quick read on galvanic corrosion, stainless and alloy dont mix. I know lots of us use stainless bolts, dont remember a thread about this. Experts please speak up.

Aluminium bolts, even Probolt can be made from poor quality cheese and snap off very easily. If you do use them be sure to use a light smear of Coppaslip or Nickelslip on the threads when you fit them.
Although I used all stainless bolts in my covers I was advised against it because in the event of an "off" they are hard and will dig into the road surface and can cause serious engine casing damage.

Basically you pays your money and takes your choice @Notty  :onya:

If using aluminium and a thread lube, def no torque settings, you'll strip them for sure. I'd be using ss bolts with thread lube only as they will be less likely to be damaged as you put them in and they look better.
