Title: Why would the seal leak so soon
Post by: Speedy1959 on Tuesday, 30 August 2022, 07:16 AM
Hi all,

As you may know I recently acquired a new (to me) 2008 GSX..
Absolutely love the bike..
One of the receipts I have shows its had new fork seals just 350 miles ago..
When I went to pick the bike up last Sunday I noticed after 50 miles or so that the left front fork is peeing out oil!
The oil is very clean so at least it has been changed..
Why would a seal give up so soon?
I cant tell you if they used pattern parts or OEM Suzuki..
However the same place replaced the battery with a make I have never heard of!
I tested it and it is very healthy (as it should be when just 6 months old)....
So using "Sherlock Holmes" logic I would deduce that theres a good chance the seals are not OEM..

What does "The Collective" think ?

S.

Sounds like cheap seals or a damaged fork tube .
If you can't see any marks on the tube it'll be cheap seals .
Batteries are a minefield but if it's good it's good none seam to last like they used to

Sounds like they need doing again with known parts and a careful inspection of the tube.

I had a seal keep blowing in under 1k miles on my Hornet. I found the reason last time I fixed it. A put in the chrome about 1/8" round with a sharp edge. It was that small and shallow I'd missed it before. A gentle file and dab of epoxy seems to have solved it.

Thank you both for your comments..
I know when people buy a looked after bike in nice conddition they always say "Its mint" or "its like new"..
Seriously this REALLY is like new!!
Remember only 6,800 miles..
Thae last 6 MOT papers show something like 80 miles a year! (Whats the point of owning a bike like this for that amount of None use)..

The forks are squeeky clean and shiny..
The lower fork legs are mint with original finish and no pitting of any sort.

One thing I have noticed is the "Bright Sparks" that replaced the seals did NOT replace the Fork protectors (Number 23 on the photos)!!
I have ordered  from Fowlers, new seals, Protectors and Dust seals and sealing washers for the lower Allen bolts..
That little lot comes to over £130 !!

I have ordered using DPD express service so unbelievably I should get them tomorrow !!!

Thanks again for your replies.
