Title: 100hp restriction
Post by: frenchgixxer on Monday, 04 July 2022, 06:14 PM
Standard power is about 106bhp I believe? However in some countries eg Japan, France, Germany it may be listed as 100bhp. I'll shortly be picking up a french bike (as live here) and on the carte gris (registration document) it says 73kw which is 98 bhp. Up until 2016 there was a strict 100bhp limit here though some modded to gain full power of their bikes of course.
I've read that the restriction may be as simple as a clip on the throttle to limit full opening? Does anyone know if thats the case or whether there was more fiddling done to restrict power? If so is it simple to remove?
Thanks in advance

We have a couple of members that live in France, so they may have some insight to this, but I don't unfortunately.

A mate of mine just had his bike remapped after having yoshi cams fitted and his bike is originally an import (can't remember where from)But even after remapping he was down on what's expected  to 130bhp as the restriction was in the ecu and didnt allow the bike to revs freely at the top of the rev range and couldn't be got around with a power commander.
So only way I could thong of "unrestricting" a standard bike is to replace the ecu with one from a country that has no preset limits .
Sorry that doesn't help but gives an insight I guess 🤔

Thanks Seth. I'm hoping its not the case but it wouldn't surprise me. Picking up the bike in a couple of weeks so maybe I can tell by how well she revs out? Cheers

My bike was 98 hp K2 from Germany, and the restriction was a simple clip at the down end of the throttle cable. Easy to remove.
Now it has 116 hp without restriction (and some other mods too) :stir:

Thanks T. I'll certainly check that when I pick the bike up.
I'd be a bit surprised if suzuki would have gone to the trouble of restricting bikes using different cams or different ecu's as this would have put prices up in the french market and surely made selling these bikes rather more expensive? A simple, but nevertheless effective mod, would make a lot more sense.
The other thing I've read is that perhaps the HP measurement was at the back wheel rather than the crank? Not sure where the quoted 106 HP of the 1400 was actually measured?

I was wondering, can these ECUs just be reflashed?

Woolich only list 04 to 08.

I'm a big fan of ECU flashing on modern bikes, but I'm not sure apart from fueling how effective it is on the 14.  Most folk I know still run Power Commanders.   It'd be interesting if the 100hp is in the ECU and not in the pipes, throttle body's, airbox etc.

EDIT:
Features available for Suzuki GSX 1400 2004-2008
IAP Fuel Maps
TPS Fuel Maps
Ignition Timing Maps
Adjust RPM Limiter
Engine Data - View Live Engine Data

That's pretty basic.

I'm hoping, for sure, that the restriction is not in the ecu as if it is then I can't do anything about that. Only way, in France, to derestrict an older bike, legally, is if it has ABS (and factory at that, not aftermarket) and, of course, a 2002 bike doesn't! Picking bike up in a week so will crawl all over it then :-)

A 2002 didn't have a smart / Cipped key and immobiliser did it?

IF it was in the ECU couldn't you just buy a full power one?

Correct. The immobiliser didn't appear till K5, so earlier bikes you can just swap the ECU.

Here's a tip, do a search on eBay for some ABS stickers.  Put them on o e of the side panels below the fuel injection logo, bet you no one will ever check or question, when they do, just point to the sticker.

Might be worth a try lol

Thansk Hooli, great to know. Are they just plug and play so to speak?

Correct. The immobiliser didn't appear till K5, so earlier bikes you can just swap the ECU.

Yup, just swap it over & it'll work. Mileage is stored in the clocks so you won't see anything different.
