Title: Throttle bodies
Post by: Eric on Saturday, 04 June 2022, 04:35 AM
Hi guru's

It looks like my 1400 has developed a problem, its only running on cylinders 1 and 2.

The story goes like this, I have purchased a quick action throttle for it and the original cables are not compatible with the twist grip so I purchased the compatible cables. So the next step was to take the throttle bodies off to fit the cables, so disconnected everything fitted the new cables and reassembled it all fired it up and this is when the problem accoured.

So I disconnected the injector loom and buzzed all the wires to see if there was a bad wire, all was good, refitted it but the problem was still there so I checked to see if I was getting a spark, yes a good spark was there, so I took all the injectors out and cleaned them with carb cleaner put them all back in and the problem is still there so I'm at a loss I just can't figure out what is causing this. Is there anybody that's had this problem and if so what could it be.

I'm getting 11.8v at the injector plugs.
The loom appears to be fine.
I'm getting a spark.

Sorry I wasn't much use mate I'm sure there are others here with more experience of the electical side of the fuel injection

Sounds like a daft question but have you checked all the throttles open and close correctly?

As it is running on 1 and 2: the 2 coils are ok.
1 is paired with 4, 2 is paired with 3.
As you are getting spark all 4 HT leads are ok.

It all leads to the throttle bodies.

Just a quick list i would check:
Are the injector connectors on the correct injector ?
Are the throttle bodies 3 and 4 opening when twisting the throttle ?
Will it run at higher revs ?
Are the rubber hoses on the IB's intact ?

Here's a picture of the throttle fully open  3 and 4 are not quite fully open but if you move them with your finger they do open as wide as 1 and 2 then come to a stop I don't know if this is how they should operate.

Thanks for the response

Yes the convectors are on the right injectors.
3 and 4 are opening but if you look at the pics when 1 and 2 are fully open 3 and 4 are not quite and all the vacume pipes are all OK.

After a closer inspection the small spring between 3 and 4 had dislodged itself  so I reffited it but have not yet put the bodies back on to see if they was the issue.

Here's a little video of the slack between 2 and 3, have I lost a little Bush out of there or is that how it's supposed to be.

I have attached 2 photos is this correct or have I lost a small Bush to go in that gap.

From memory the cables actuate no3 & the rest work off that. Looking how yours are massively different when opening I'd say that spring was the issue.

Had similar years ago on on ex's 14. It'd idle on two & took a lot of throttle for the other two cylinders to cut in. It was down to the TBs being massively out of balance.

OK people so here's an update.

I've solved it there was a little spring that had fallen off  I found it on the floor so I stuck it back on and hey presto it's alive again. Thanks everyone for pointing me in the right direction I much appreciate it, I was thinking that I had fried the ecu. Once again thanks for all your input.

Glad you got it fixed mate.  Note all throttles should open the same amount with throttle twist, you need to adjust the spring /screws until they do that.  Then set idle at 1100rpm and then balance the throttle bodies on a 4 channel vacuum gauge.
