Title: Ad Blue
Post by: grog on Friday, 10 December 2021, 06:47 PM
Add Blue needs to filled in many cars, trucks. Without it they just dont go. Another save the planet idea. Urea is main ingredient. Add Blue is horrible stuff, super corrosive, eats clothes, paint, destroys concrete if spilt. Doesnt do skin much good. So, because Australias biggest supplier China, has stopped exporting it here, Due to trade war, we have about 5 weeks worth left. No one has a clue how to solve this prob. Our Govt says lets  start making it here, 12 mths minimum b4 production. Lets see how this one pans out. All those transport trucks not working. Not a lot of Tesla trucks around. What a f... up.

Australia will capitulate to China as per usual, will jave to give up on a few demands it has made to China and possibly agree to future concessions.

I dare sat that China will restore trade links before it becomes a crisis, alternatively it is easy enough to bypass the AdBlue system so that vehicles can run without it (some of our less law abiding hauliers are at it over here) it is after all injected into the exhaust after combustion - just don't tell Greta, or maybe do tell her, the Chinese will certainly start supplying again then!

It's all a bit of a farce really, Nissan have announced that they are going to stop making the Navara Crew Cab as they don't have an engine to meet regulations, yet Isuzu in the current D-Max Crew Cab have an engine which meets emissions without the need for AdBlue & as of April 2022 the use of red diesel will be banned with exception of agricultural, horticultural & a few other uses, so the construction industry will have to use white diesel - I'm not sure that this will reduce emissions but it will increase costs by up to 40% which will be passed on to the end user

The red dye is a big pollutant.
Will I still be able to use red in my boat.

My understanding is that AdBlue is a suppliment which newer diesel vehicles req. every few thousand miles - depending on the manufacturer it can differ between around 6000mls & 12000mls between top-ups. It also degrades in storage, so no point in stockpiling it.

Thank goodness I bought one of those `nasty` petrol engined cars the last time I changed ours!

Luckily I don't need to use it any of our cars .
But I thought it was made from pig piss or some kind of animal urine .
I also I didn't know it was added to the exhaust I thought it was added before combustion.
Everyday is a school day .

The latest news I've heard & it's only rumours so far is they will bypass the system which just emits more pollution instead of capturing the particles attached to the droplets of AdBlue.
It's quite technical actually 🤔

@GSXKING To meet our emissions levels most engines have both a DPF system which consists of a particulate filter & burner which then burns the ash caught in the filter (so more fuel used to make this work-throw more in to get less out!) as well as the AdBlue system which basically consists of a storage tank for the AdBlue, an electric pump & injector. Sadly both systems can be deleted with the correct software & some welding, our fitters vans used to suffer with blocked DPF filters due to the amount of idling the vans did while the fitters were working on machines & 5mph driving on sites. It was fairly common to delete the systems when machines came up for disposal as they usually went on a boat abroad to countries with less strict rules. Both systems are fairly technical but the DPF system is probably the most technical of the two tbh

Then there's EGR - Exhaust Gas Recirculation  where a diesel engine basically breathes its own exhaust, so the emissions get burned again to reduce particulate emissions. A Catalytic converter takes care of oxides of nitrogen and other nasties.  Not a bad idea, but the egrs get really hot, so the need cooling, usually via the engines cooling system.  They also need a control valve to proportionally open and close them depending on throttle opening and vehicle speed. When they fail, they are costly to replace, they can be deleted and mapped out of the ecu, but the worst is the build up in the intake tract and the engine internals can lead to premature engine wear and ultimately failure which means more cars to built and more materials into landfill.

I don't like ad blue because it's nasty and corrosive, and DPF also clog and require more fuel to burn them clean.

A well maintained diesel will run for 500,000km and burn cleanly.

My 2016 2.4 Hilux. Just on 160 th ks. DPF just a huge PIA, had 5 replaced under wrty. Worked out, compared to Toyota fuel usesage quote, has used just on 14 th dollars of diesel more than they said. 3 timing chains, 3 alternators. Now the display screen beeps all the time, changes stations etc. There are more probs with it, blows clouds of smoke, always idling up trying to clear DPF. Shouldve got a Great Wall, at least you know theyre shit.

Exactly, it's eyes wide open stuff, if you know it's shit you expect it to be shit and don't get let down when it turns to shit.  New Hiluxes, tritone, BT50s all shit, built to a price and not expected to last much beyond 175th kms (7yrs average motoring)

@Eric GSX1400K3 Totally agree with the above, one of the biggest problems with Volvo earth moving equipment was/is the venturi blocking causing a total restriction & putting machines into limp mode - usually in the region of £1500 to repair if calling out the main dealers, fortunately not a very technical repair to remove & clean out, it just always seemed to happen on a Friday afternoon or when a fitter was no where near.

Also as mentioned the running temps of engines has risen significantly, which again on its own reduces the life span due to early component failure. I have seen several premature engine failures after approx 4000/6000 hours use which would be between three and four years use resulting in £20K plus repair bills, this alone almost forces you into paying for extended warranties at an average cost of £8K

Mitsubishi Triton block up inlet manifold very quickly. EGR disable fixes it. Illegal but. Ive seen them down to a hole where a pencil just fits. Mongrel job to clean out, Mits just whack new manifold on, not sure what that costs.

Thankfully the grubernment really saw this problem for what it is and pulled the strings to get Indonesia to promise to give Australia 5,000 tonnes of refined urea in January. Our local manufacturer Incitec Pivot was set to close their plant in January (Merry Christmas to all the workers there)

Here is the Con

"AdBlue® is made of a colourless mixture of high-purity urea (32.5%) and deionised water (67.5%), as set out in the ISO 22242 standard. Urea contains ammonia; the active ingredient in AdBlue® that reacts with NOx and neutralises it before it enters the atmosphere."     :frustrated:

I have it on very good authority that plain de mineralised water, although not legal will allow the vehicle to go on it's merry way without harming said vehicle

Agree, a load of shit, cows piss actually. Earlier versions have a normal tank level sender unit, fill with water, away you go. Later have a reflective light type sender, it shines onto fluid for the level. If you use clear liquid, just sees bottom of tank, wont go. If you use dyed water, sim colour to ad blue, reflects the level, away you go. Its just sprayed into exhaust, no harm done. Illegal but who would know. A Suzuki PAIRS system just done a different way.

You climate change denier you, how dare you !! ........wait till I tell Greta.
Oh that reminds me, why are councils consenting subdivisions barely above the high tide line. Then saying they could be at risk of flooding in the event of a one in a hundred year flood. Certainly makes insurance expensive.
The super wealthy buying a low lying island then spending millions building holiday homes on them while we get to pay a carbon tax......sounds about right :onya:
