I've had nearly new tyres explode too, not as bad as that but bad enough. Hence why I'll never buy michelin again.

I had a Pirelli car tyre explode 2nd day of use. They blamed the fitter, that was me.

Not because of the tyre issue , but just couldn't do any distance on the 14. So to me what's the point of having it sitting in the garage.
So was sold to Jez , middle of this year

Many years ago riding from Perth to Darwin on a Katana 1100 the chain guard broke in two places and bounced in between the sprocket and the tyre. A broken mount was rubbing on the tyre and eventually cut through tyre wall instantly deflating the tyre at about 120kph. I certainly puckered up for that emergency stop.

The video was quite instructional.  :hat: :hat: @mjgt  @Stepdoug

The tyre age factor comes to mind when you buy a 10 year old bike with the factory fitted tyres still fitted and only a few hundred k's on the clocks.
A friend bought a 1098 Ducati and had noticed the tyre condition, however still thought a quick ride was in order prior to changing them.
Needless to say he wrote the bike off and gashed his thigh pretty badly. Lesson learned the hard way.  :whatever: :whatever:

Same here. I appear to have done 13k between two bikes since Easter this year, so the Strumpet has just had it's third set of tyres this year fitted (3 rears, 2 fronts). There's probably 2-3k before easter on my 14 but tbh I've lost track.

Having said that the tyres that have just gone on Strumpet are 2017 & 2018 as I got them from someone who had them on a bike & didn't like them. He removed them after a few hundred mile & left them in the shed, then I got them & left them in my garage for about six months too.

And it still only needs one puncture to ruin everything.

When I bought my VFR800, it had 6 year old Michelin's on it.  Hated them..

I set the suspension up with proper sag numbers etc.  Rear shock had been converted to a rebuilt CBR 900 Fireblade shock so had all the adjustments on it.

But no matter what I tried with suspension and using recommended tyre pressures, every corner I went around, not even pushing at all, the bike always felt like the front and rear were sliding out on me.  The tyres themselves did have an "old" look to them in that they were very grey in colour..

After finally getting fed up with it I replaced the tyres with new Metzeler Roadtec01 front and rear.  Same suspension settings and the bike was amazing, the way it should have been.

I was actually able to track down one of the previous owners of the bike (aside from the guy I bought it off) and he said that the bike sat outside a lot in the sun.  So I dare say that the tyres just got weathered and worn out that way due to the sun and ultra violet light..  unlike the brand new "old" tyres that were tried out in the video test and were stored properly etc.

Small update, that bloke in the video was right. I've done 150miles today in temps from about 10c down to 3c on raods that were sometimes damp, the Storms are scrubbed in to about 5mm off the back edges & didn't feel any different to new new tyres (if that makes sense).

I must be the unluckiest SOB around as far as tyres on my GSX go.

I found a puncture in the rear of mine at the end of a ride out in June, a combination of my own holidays and workshop time avaialbility at my dealer meant that it was 28th July before it got sorted.

The next run out was a 200 mile round trip in August with a couple of mates, the first 100 being steady to break the tyre in. Two weeks later I try to drag the bike ot for another ride only to find it won't budge because of a broken screw embeded in it.

Another tyre ordered and fitted after a long wait 01/10, and it did survive the next short run out. However, this morning I have gone to pull the GSX out to check over for next week's MOT and I find that the front tyre is now deflated due to a pinhole puncture.

Tomorrow my GSX will be having it's third tyre fitted in three months, with every one of those taken off having plenty of meat still on them  :furious:

Why aren't you getting them plugged? I'd never throw away a plugable tyre.

I agree. You can have a tyre plugged twice (assuming the puncture isn't in the illegal area or tyre state) before having to change it. I had a puncture professionally repaired on my Triumph (when I had it) on a new tyre that had done 80 miles, good as new after that. Cost me all of £15.

I've plugged a tyre myself in the past (and still cary the kit around when touring), but only to get me somewhere for a replacement.

My impression was that they should only be regarded as temporary fixes, perhaps I'm being over-cautios then?

I change tyres after a puncture - I wouldn't be happy at 120 mph (private track) relying on a plug

Temporary plug kits you can do yourself are indeed temporary, not that I haven't done max speed on them & run them for thousands of miles till the tyre wore out.

Plugs at a tyre shop are from the inside & as good as an undamaged tyre.

I think my personal best is six temporary plugs in one tyre & I still ran it till it was bald.

As long as the hole isn't too big I have found this stuff to last the life of the tyre, I used to travel to the city at Tradie hour and would get at least one puncture every couple of months from the slack bastards dropping screws and nails off the back of their utes, only tyre I had to replace out of at least a dozen punctures was when a bit if roof flashing took out the sidewall.

Well I got a new tyre sorted out for the front yesterday at a place I had not used before and whilst I was waiting had a chat with the fitter.

He was very "anti" about doing any sort of repairs on mototcycle tyres except perhaps for lightweights and scooters etc. This was pretty much what I had heard from other places in the past, although to be fair the main motive may be that they wanted to sell tyres. The main reason / excuse given was the liability that the could be subject to if a repair failed causing damage or injury.

I'm still a bit conflited over this, if some of you guys are getting decent life out of tyres with repairs I suppose that there must be a valid argument for it, but I would still not be happy heading out for a really long run knowing the tyre was not as the manufacturer intended.

Perhaps when I pick up the next puncture it may be a case of making a judgement based on the remaining tread depth  - if it's getting low, let it go?

I have carried a can of that stuff around for years when I was touring around Europe. When I had the first recent puncture on the GSX I dug it out to find that it was five years over the recommended "use by" date. Regardless, I filled the tyre with it and it worked perfectly well and inflated the tyre well enough to get me to the workshop.

Like plugging, I'm not sure that I would want to rely on it for any length of time, but it could certainly get you to your next hotel if you were away from home.

The can I used has now been replaced ready for my next big adventure, everyone should have one under the seat.

I will say I'm much happier to have a repair in the rear rather than the front. But I've never had a repair fail, whereas I've had a nearly new tyre delaminate...

One thing to note about tyreweld type stuff, tyre places refuse to repair tyres it's been used in. Something to do with how it affects the inside of the tyre so the patch/mushroom/glue doesn't always stick as well. Temporary plug kits are just drilled out & a perm mushroom headed bung can be fitted from inside.

Having said that, I carry tyreweld too.

I don`t have a problem with plugging a tyre either. Covered a few thou afterwards too.
I carry Tyre Weld under my seat in case of emergency. Had to fit some in a Fireblade of mine once. I forgot about it over time and even that stuff saw the tyre through a thou or so hard miles. At tyre replacement time the guy at the garage wasn`t impresssed, it was a completely sticky gunged-up mess!

Tried a mushroom plug on a car tyre on top of Mt. Hotham and it didn't seal properly , but in conjunction with a can of tyre weld it sealed perfectly and saved the weekend, guy ran the tyre until it needed replacing with no dramas

A few years ago I got a puncture in the rear tyre of my Beemer at around 1500 miles so I replaced the tyre with a new one but kept the old one which I plugged with an internal mushroom plug.  I was well pissed when my new tyre picked up a puncture at about 1000 miles so I put the original one back on and run that for another 7000 miles before replacing it with my spare (now plugged) which is still on the bike after 5000 miles and is still going strong.  I have no problem riding with (correctly) plugged tyres.
