Title: GoPro and similar - resolutions
Post by: VladTepes on Thursday, 02 March 2017, 05:55 PM
A q for everyone - What resolution do you normally use?
720p or 1080?
4:3 or 16:9
30fps or 60fps ?

Varies for me, depends what im going for. I use a Hero 3+ When just effectively useing it as a dash cam then i just use 720p and default everything else..
When im going for something a little more important then i ramp the settings up to max everything..
Im looking to upgrade to the Hero 5 but its 350 notes that are better spent else where at the mo.

I use a contour roam.... bit cheaper than the GoPro and with similar functions... nearly always use 720p and 30fps on the bike, helps with memory usage.  Same when skiing.... When diving/snorkelling always use 1080p cos I'm never in the water that long lol....

Hero5, and almost every time I use 1080 and 50 fps.

btw - hope you know, but 50(25) or 60(30) fps is recommended to use depending what AC frequencies are used in a country you are filming.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mains_electricity_by_country#Table_of_mains_voltages_and_frequencies

Especially inside, but artificial outside lightening could also affect picture. using right fps, should reduce "blinking' on a picture

Not exactly. PAL and NTSC are TV broadcasting formats. Digital video is not related to any of them.

But if your power network is working with 50Hz, it mean your inside lightening could blink 50 per second, which is not visible by human eye. But if you are filming 60 of 30 fps it will be visible.
PAL and NTSC are not related to digital video, but this is exactly why they have different frame rate. For consumer conveniences, those settings in cameras are named  PAL and NTSC, and changing them you can choose FPS range multiple for 50 or 60

Hope, this is making sense :)

50 FPS

60 FPS

That makes very good sense - this is why I see the neon speed signs blinking in all my vidoes  :onya:

Sow a video that looks fine to me here in AUS may have slight strobing issues when viewed in the UK?

No. Not like this.
if you are filming in country, where power-lines are with 50Hz, the you use 25/50/100 fps, and if you are filming in country where power-lines are 60Hz it's better to use 30/60/120 fps.

this is not affecting viewing - filming only :)

btw - UK and AUS use same 50Hz  :hat:

Thanks for the tech info all.

Kiwi yeah it does take forever because it's not just uploading but also transcoding....
Would be a bugger for it to drop out. Do you often have unstable Internet connection?

This is why post processing so so very important..
If you are going out for a ride and recording your footage, coming home and taking the vid files from your cam and then just try and upload them, you are missing a vital step.
I hope this is not what you are doing Kiwi.
You need to run your recorded footage through software first to re-encode it to a suitable file for your purpose..
This helps shrink the files and makes uplaoding so much easier and quicker.

Ahhh, this could be my problem also.   I didn't know there was another step.  I just take the card out of the camera, put it in an adapter & download it to my laptop. They play ok, but a bit jerky sometimes.

Ok, what's this step we're missing & where can we get the software to do whatever the 'raw' data needs to enable us to get it on here.  Is there a suitable free download to do this or is this type of software something you have to purchase?

Thx
