Good day one and all.
I'm a new member of the club
Q. My Suzuki GSX 1400 K3 manufactured 2002 is currently running rather hot.
Can anyone please advise how to drain and replenish the oil filled radiator / coolant system etc.
I've owned my bike for the last 17 years - genuine mileage just over 7000
I've always relied on a mechanic to do the services for me, but their costs have increased a hell of a lot - hence I want to give it a go myself
Cheers
Look forward to reading your replies

Given this is your first post - it would be nice if you could kindly introduce yourself - Introductions here: https://gsx1400owners.org/forum/index.php?board=20.0
However to answer your question - given the 14 is oil cooled - if you change the oil and filter - details of how to do this are in your handbook - then that will drain the oil out of the oil cooler (unless you really want one of us to spell out how one changes oil and filter?)
You might also want to check your fuelling, as incorrect fuelling can also make the 14 run hot - when was the last time you had the injection system balanced for instance
Surely this has got to be a wind-up .
If it's not I'd be visiting the mechanic who's been chatting me for coolant for 17 years and also ask what else he's been charging you for that's not needed or even been done.
If your serious about looking after your bike go to the downloads and get the Suzuki workshop manual and follow it .
You don't need to drain the oil cooler in fact you'll probably damage the hose joins if you do they are very easily broken.
Where do you live ?
Not your address but town/city and country.
As barmy said head to the bar and say hello to all asap .
:cry2:
Gidday Phillr, how have you deduced it's running hot? :confused1: As Barmy said, just change the oil & filter. 17 years & never changed your own oil? Must have deep pockets . . . :whistling:

Like
Apparently you are in the UK according to post, It baffles me how a 14 could run hot in the UK even with incorrect fuelling.
@Snapey I know the seasons are all arse about face in Oz, but April Fools.
What's are the chances that his first post is also his last. :whistling:

I couldn't believe what I was reading Jeff & for ten minutes I tried to think of something intelligent to write. You know that's very unlikely so that was my unintelligent response to this guys strange post. :)
Good afternoon one and all,
Honestly my enquiry wasn't an April Fool or joke, it was genuine question about the coolant system.
Like I said previously my beloved K3 has been maintained at a reputable dealership. Now I have hit the tender age of 61 I need to look after the pennies, and start to maintain the beast myself.
To confirm - all I need to do is drain the engine oil (obviously after removing the drain plug lol) change the oil filter and top up with new oil as dictated in the hand book. However, one question will the oil then circulate automatically into the coolant radiator, obviously it will but will any airlocks be created.
Fellow followers please bear with me, I've been riding motorbikes since I was 17 I love to ride not get my hands dirty until now my pockets are no longer as deep as they used to be - there we go, my first post wasn't me last, and neither will this one be.
My first bike which I loved was a Suzuki GT250M RAM Air system wish I had kept it, would have been worth a few bob by now. So please to be part of the clan, cant want for the Christmas party lol social distancing
Cheers PhillR - must press on got to find the drain plug!!!!
You'll need some tools Phillr, the oil filter can be an arse (as in real tight) so a correct size oil filter wrench is a very handy thing. The sump bolt is the lowest thing under the bike, be careful when you do it back up, it's easy to strip the threads in the aluminium casing if you go too hard on it. 10/11nm off the top of me head, with a new washer.
Take your time & you'll do it. Have 5L 10w40 oil on hand to fill up with. :onya: :clapping: Start a new thread & ask the guys what's the best oil for one of these . . . :whistling: :stir:

Yes & no....
The oil cooler drains when you drain the oil & as it's full flow from the pump any air in it is pushed out by the oil when the engine runs.
The sump plug is obvious on the bottom of the sump, it's a 17mm spanner from memory. As already said, don't over tighten it as they can strip. Just wind it up & give it a bit more to nip it tight, there is a torque figure but I don't know it.
I'd suggest taking a look in the downloads section of the site & getting the full workshop manual, have a read through any jobs you want to do first & you'll have a better idea what you're doing.
If you are not sure what to do Phill you can come round to mine and I will talk you through it, just bring the oil and filter, I have a ramp and all the tools, might even find some coffee. As the buzzard flaps I'm only about 18 miles away but you will have to use the road.
Sump plug 17 ft lbs, if you don't have a torque wrench use a very short spanner as very few threads in the casing
Why do you think it's running hot anyway? 14s hardly ever do that, they are over cooled as standard.
Hello again one and all.
Hooli, KiwiCol and steve porter thank you ever so much for the advice much appreciated it really is.
mjgt thanks for the invite to North Somerset to help me out if it wasn't so far would take you up on the offer, shame the original Severn bridge or the new Prince Charles bridge didn't start in Whitmore Bay (Barry) linking over the channel to Somerset.
Thanks again guys and remember to always ride defensively LOL

I`m wondering why you think its running hot too? Whats actually happening? You say its been serviced previously, therefore the oil can`t be that bad. Is the oil level within the limits on the sight glass? If so, its unlikely to be the issue (if indeed there is one).
When you do change the oil yourself, be sure to buy a new sump plug and washer - and make sure you fit the washer the right way up, (its the opposite way to the way you may think!!), otherwise you`ll not get a satisfactory seal.
Meh, I've changed that washer once in over 160k miles. The reseal fine. I only changed it as I got a filter from a dealer and they included it.
Sump plugs n washers getting up there in the can of worm department, almost with tyres and oil. Fumoto much better option for me. 😎

Although I no longer own a GSX1400, I'd be glad to help out a fellow 1402 owner. I used to do ALL my own maintenance including a full strip and ground up nut and bolt rebuild. I had to give up riding for health reasons :furious:
If you're at Barry,I'm only 30 miles away in Cwmbran. If we get a dry sunny day you're welcome to pop over to mine with oil, filter and a new sump plug washer and I'll go through changing the oil with you. I'll even dispose of the old oil. I mix it with creosote to weather proof my shed/workshop :imrgreen:
Froudy, an offer he cant refuse. All accolades to you. :hat:

Must admit I had no trouble with my Fumoto until I went through that deep pothole on an unsealed road. My fault, expensive lesson learned. I'd have another one, just stay away from deep holes & high speed bumps.
Col, i reckon stock plug wouldve also been damaged in your instance/bad luck moment. Just my opinion.

Two offers of help in two days, what a forum.
I understand that the distance to my place is a problem for you but Froudy is quite close and he knows what he's doing, good luck.
