Hi all
So today I decided to check the valve clearances and all was good I'm glad to say, infact all inlet measurements were the same (0.15mm) as were the exhaust measurements (0.25mm) with the exception of No2 exhaust which was slightly tighter (0.20mm) but still in spec so all good
Refitting the cam cover went well until the internal thread stripped on one of the cam cover bolts arghhhh, it's the thread closest to No3 cylinder on the inlet side arghhhhh
Has anyone else had this and what is the best repair procedure? I'm assuming that it can be helicoiled, but can it be done in place or would I be best to remove the cam journal? Although I'm pretty good on the spanners and have always dome my own work on cars, bikes & wagons I have never actually used a helicoil so am a little bit concerened about making a mess of it and creating a whole lot more work and expense :furious:
Thanks
Pete
I've done one in place & two or three off the bike. I was much happier doing the ones off the bike. They are M7xsomething, I've forgot the thread. It's a blind hole from memory so don't drill it out too deep when you do it.
The metal* they are made from appears to be cheap mild cheddar cheese, I stripped two of mine using the extension bar off my socket set as a screwdriver & just winding them back in before nipping them up.
Cheers
@Hooli Is it just a case of removing the one cam journal? I'm hoping so that I dont have to disturm anything else
Cheers
Pete
Yup, just the one you need. They are lettered A-D, with the letters upright read from the TB side, makes it easy to put back in the correct orientation.
I always turn the engine over so the valves near the journal I'm removing aren't open, that way the springs don't bend the camshaft when it's unsupported. That has to be kinder to the cam & removes the extra risk of stripping a journal bolt when using to push the valve back open on refitting.
I've just looked in the garage for you, the thread is M7x1.0mm.
I thought I had done the same thing but turned out that I hadn't refitted a washer along with the cam bolt - it just kept turning as though stripped

I had put everything back together and thought that I might get away with it, but was playing on my mind so have just stripped it down again & removed the can journal so ready for repair tomorrow now. I think I will take it to the local Engineering shop and ask if they will do it for me as I dont have any Helicoils anyway, if not then I will see if I can buy a kit tomorrow
Appreciate your help :onya:

@Notty I have just taken it apart again and unfortunately the thread is shot, most of it cam out with the bolt so its a helicoil job I'm afaraid
Apppreciate the info though

Probably nearly as cheap for one, I think I paid £15 or so for the kit. But as I've done several more of them since, it's paid for itself now. Plus it means 20-30mins later I can finish the job rather than wait.

Thanks again
@Hooli popped into a local engine repair shop and walked away 5 minutes later with the repaired part, he used a time-sert rather than a helicoil and charged me a tenner, was pretty happy with that. It is a proper old school engineering shop the type that you rarely see these days, they actually repair things as opposed to replacing them
