Title: Rear brake caliper refurb on the 1400
Post by: Tonythetiger on Friday, 02 July 2021, 06:07 AM
Well I'm going to start the refurb on the rear caliper this weekend. I've had a quick look and it's showing quite a bit of what looks like rust on the outer most part of the piston so I may need to put a new one in but i'm hoping it will just polish off. I'm looking forward to the time in the garage as it's been FAR to long since I done anything in there. I'll try and do a couple of pics if I remember.

Yep !! Just received the rear caliper seal kit for mine as well, just waiting on the front kit to arrive and I can start my re-furb  :hat:

Just rebuilt a rear caliper I got from a GSXR K2. Got quite some trouble with one of the pinch bolts, which was almost "self-welded" in the 'front' half -- look at the bolts at the top of the first picture. Replaced bolts and pin with titanium ones :-). A thin layer of fresh paint to make it look new(ish)
To my great surprise, pistons were not seized or marked though, and just needed a clean. Not sure what they are made of, as they are not looking like OEM Nissin ones. Different cups aspect (inner cup look like a bowl, an not like a pot as OEM), bronze colour even when cleaned and polished, *very* light. Certainly not stainless. Maybe titanium? Who knows what a GSXR owner can mod ;-)

Spongey, maybe ceramic. They look like some i got for Brembo once. Ive noticed my rear rotor has always run hotter than fronts. Thats over lifetime, 4 diff sets of pads. Pistons free. No idea why but after a 30k run, 20 degrees hotter. Doesnt seem to do any harm. Think i remember Hooli saying similar. Might be wrong.

Rings a faint bell Grog. My guess is the fronts being floating discs cool better, I seem to recall reading that's one advantage of them. I think it's because the centre part of the disc doesn't heat up so there is less heat stored during braking.

Well , I've done the rear caliper and it wasn't in bad shape AND it was a breeze to re-bleed. So, while I was in the mood I decided to do the swingarm bearing re-grease and they were in decent shape but will need to be replaced next year, then onto checking the wheel bearings and they looked and sounded in quite good shape EXCEPT for the sprocket bearing which was pretty bad, so I replaced it in double quick time as I was thinking it would be a right pain to get out BUT no, it was out in under 30 seconds but the spacer was near enough welded to it but only took a minute to sort out. Then onto the hard work of putting it all back together without any lost/missing parts. Been a long afternoon in the garage but I've loved every minute of it (I'm broken now tho)and the new "big blue bike lift " was a very good investment as I wasn't sitting/lying on the floor struggling to get  stuff done. I cleaned/greased everything so she should be good to go when I finally get 5 mins to ride the bike.

Great work TTT, all lubed up and ready to go. While youre at it, both levers and rear brake pivot love some slippery stuff. HHS from Wurth very good for those. Spray grease. Works great on stand pivots and seat latches also. 👍
