Gidday Duffo & welcome to the forum.  We prefer if new members can introduce themselves here:  https://gsx1400owners.org/forum/index.php?board=20.0 before going on to ask questions.

There's a heap of things that could cause that which you describe.  Poor fuel, bad earth, dirty / wet connectors, bad connection or shorting in loom where it goes into the headlight, worn out starter, ignition switch issues.

So, tell us a bit more about the bike, is it a daily ride?  ie, not sat for months & now won't go.  Have you been doing any work on it & it's now playing up?  Has it been pressure washed & is now playing up?

There's plenty of info & clever guys here & they will get it sorted for ya, just a bit more background on the bike would help.   Oh, & pop into the intro section & say gidday, have a look at what others have done to give you an idea.

Cheers.

Sounds like a timing issue. Like when a worn cam chain jumps a tooth, or the ECU has gone south.
These are the worst options, hopefully it's something simple.

If 14 get low volts to starter, turn slow, backfire, just what they do. You need to check volts at starter wire when cranking. If all ok, faulty starter motor. If volts not ok, need to check both positive and earth connections to find drop.

Col scared him off by telling him to introduce himself before asking questions, must be a delicate little chap or chap-ess.  :whistling:

it is nice to know that there are  still people with a sense of humor ,
sorry i did not understand the protocol. i will take more time to read. i did not realize how quick you guys answer. so please accept my humble apologies'

it has been playing up since last year but the bike had been played up as i could not ride it, due to an injury. so when i was able to ride again i purchased a new battery, but it still carried on doing it it starts first time initially then i can ride around fine. then when it is switched off and i go back even after 20 mins the thing backfires  sometimes it spins up fast and just wont start , then sometimes it seems to stall as if it was firing on the compression stroke.
now i will get back to the reading bit and wait for any suggestions (polite i hope)

Thier some really old folk here who use computers lol
.
My advice on your bike is to go have a good look through the threads as it could be so many things .
My initial thoughts are fuel system so I'd be going front to back checking filters and especially the teabag filter in the fuel pump as it sounds like once things settle it's ok but once it's run and stired things up the filters might my getting slightly clogged.
There's lots of info here on what to do and how to check .
Just do a search and you'll find that .
If you don't find it let us know and there can be other suggestions then but you need to eliminate the obvious before trying to go though everything at once .
Good luck .
