Title: stretching leather??
Post by: gmars70970 on Wednesday, 14 April 2021, 04:16 AM
Clutching at straws here and kidding myself on that i've not put weight on in the last 26yrs !! :rofl2:

But has anybody got any tips on how to stretch or supple up old leathers? I wore these when I was 21yrs old and just dug them out the loft, forever hopeful   :rofl2:

There not for wearing on the GSX1400 but for when on a track day with my old zx6r.

Jeeez, there is only one thing that I can get into now that I could 26 years ago - The Wife!!  :whistling:

On a more serious note I think you can buy a Leather softening creme, or run a hot bath/shower and leave them on a hanger & the steam helps

Eat more pies to force them out?

🤣🤣🤣 thats not a bad thing 👍

I'll try the leather softener, they just seem to be digging in at the shoulders. Probably the belly pulling the leather down.

Bought a great pair of Alpinestars Leathers off eBay earlier this year and they came up a little too tight. Tried the shower, leather cream and even hanging them up with heavy weights on the bottom of the trousers for two weeks. Made not a jot of difference 😔 so sold them on.

I know but I thought I could at least spare you the indignity and stupidity of taking a shower in a pair of leathers you can barely fit into never mind get out of when wet😂🤣😂🤣 I thought my misses was going to die laughing 😂🤣😂

🤣🤣 my misses would be exactly the same, but she'd probably video it & share with everybody too.

Had read someone in the US suggested the shower option then going for a 2hr bike ride in them too dry. Could you imagine trying that in Scotland 🤣🥶

Well! There's your answer. Never mind the shower, just go out wearing  your leathers in our fine Scottish weather. A few rides/soaks will stretch them sufficiently.  :rofl2:

I see you already have the answer to stretching leather, I was going to suggest the same thing, get them soaking wet & wear them till they're dry.  That's how we used to break in army boots we used for tramping,  as a teenager.  Get 'em sodden & walk in them till they're dry, always worked, so can't see why it wouldn't with a full (literally) suit.

Wear the suit every time you eat for a few weeks?

I know this works but it is not particularly comfortable.  Get the leather wet (get in the bath or take a decent shower) and then stretch them out by wearing them in the position you want until they are almost dry then rub in a good quality leather soap and finally dry naturally.  We used to do this with our combat boots, made them very supple and comfortable to wear, done it with leather jeans and it works a treat.

Mate  :hat: like everything motorcycling, stuff we wear has a use by date. The stitching in particular usually degrades. Worth considering if you are doing a track day.

Leathers all softened up with leather moisturiser, hung in the bathroom for a few days and they finally felt fine.
Gave them a wee try out on the gsx today, still not sure i'll wear them for the track day tho.

Fair play that's a good result  :onya:

How do you rate the HJC helmet? I have one and has to be one of the best I have owned, the internal sun visor works well for me - maybe slight downside is that the vents don't seem to let in much of a breeze

Cheers

Pete

No complaints from the HJC. Had it a few years now and used it for decent runs to the North of Scotland, daily commutes and track days home and abroad.
Does them all well 👍

About time for a new helmet tho, always wanted a simpson but keep being put off with the complaints of noise level.

I`ve had three HJC helmets during the last 18yrs. All have been fantastic. Great quality and reasonably priced. My wife has her HJC too, no complaints. We both have smoked stick-on visor inserts which now need replacing, however, I`m not sure of the legality of those nowadays, so i`m now looking at replacing both lids with the `new generation`, smoke flip-down inner visors......HJC again of course!

Back in the `80`s I spent a small fortune on an AGV.......turned out to be the worst helmet ever thanks to an ill fitting visor. Never again!
