I'd like to get a good quality (accurate) tyre pressure gauge, and due to my eyesight ideally a digital one.
Also ideally not break the bank.
My local bike shop has two styles
Brand I've never heard of $20
Oxford brand $55 (ouch)
There might be some available by other means, be it online or at not-specifically motorcycle shops.
I'd like to hear from fellow Australians if they have any particular recommendations (from experience) and also if there are brands to specifically avoid.
You foreign folk are free to chime in of course, but it's a bit far to pop down to Halfords.
As long as once you set the pressures you keep using the same gauge you won't go far wrong .
The problems start when you use lots of different ones .
Even cheaper kit is ok these days just not dirt cheap stuff as that's rubbish.
Vlad, we use Blue Point and Wurth at work. Both very good. Wurth hose a bit long. Around $120. 6 months ago i bought a E Bay copy. The others are Chinese also. Slightly shorter hose, slightly smaller dial, connector is exact same, very good for bike. Pressure reading exact same as dearer ones. Havent had a problem, even had battery. $20. Think i had to buy air hose connector, cant remember. Ive prob used it 20 times, all good so far. E Bay number 393164843650.
Oxford for me, with large needle dial (easy to read) flexible hose and 90 deg fitting. My preference. As previously mentioned buy one and use it consistently. Air pressure pumps at servos always read under as they don't want people to BLOW out their tyres and face the blame :^P
And tyre pressure should be set when cold at home in the garage /shed as the pressure goes up when hot and even with a good gauge under the seat you will still get wrong pressure readings at the servo
Even if your bike has been sitting in the sun the pressure will be different to a cold reading
4x4 accessory shops usually have a good range of good quality gauges
Yep,
I really wanted a digital type with no hose as I prefer more compact.
Should be able to take pressure and it should show on screen until reset.
So something like this ebay item 123243190755
but cheaper.
get one with a bleed off valve, saves a lot of pissing about, I`ve personally found the digital ones annoying to use when trying to bleed off pressure, whereas the analogue type doesn`t need to always reset and you get an instant reading
I have a Michelin gauge I bought about 20 years ago. It is as $60 back then.

get one with a bleed off valve,
I have one that came on a 4wd compressor but am VERY suspicious as to it's accuracy.

ouch expensive ! esp as that's Septic dollars !
funnily enough their apparently local retailer (closest to me) doesn't actually stock their gauges - and the ones they do stock are useless (0-15 or 0-30psi)

On this site the top 3 seem good, if not cheap.

I`ve had my longacre 25+ years and it`s still spot on, the rubber bumper seems to be a good idea,I dropped a Michelin gauge no more than a foot once and it was rooted, I check it every now and again against a couple of digitals that I have
I've got 4 gauges. A cheapie that I no longer use, an expensive (ish) analogue gauge & a digital gauge on my tire inflator. Then there's the one for the quads, only goes to 10-12lb, only need 4.5lb though.
I know pressure goes up with temp. Has anyone ever checked how much. I always check mine cold, never ever checked after a hot ride. Our roads get that hot, cant walk on them with bare feet. Something ill do, pity its not hot now. Only will be 15 in morning, just set pressures, will check in morning after 20ks on cool roads.

Not the bike, but the Tyres on my car go from 28/31 to 31/34 within a few kms even on a cold day and I've seen as high as 37/44 on a hot day giving it heaps in the twisties

From a googling, it expands 1% for every 6C the temp increases.
Did the check today, 15 degrees ambient temp. Tyres at 36f 42r 100k round trip and tyre temp was 34f 36 r. And pressure was
39f 46r
That's very thorough Steve, thanks!
So, at start:
Tire Temp: Front PSI Rear PSI
15 36 42
100K run
Tire Temp: Front PSI Rear PSI
34 & 36 39 46

that looks better, it looked ok on my phone when i did it
Tire Temp: Front PSI Rear PSI
34 & 36 39 46
Yep, seems the old 3psi rule holds true then...
That is to say expect about a 3psi increase over cold inflation pressure.
I run at 34f/38r cold. Now just to check my analogue tyre gauge is still accurate.

I run at 34f/38r cold.
It's interesting to see how much variation there is in people's settings.
I think the primary difference is the tyres used, and secondarily the riding style (twisty roads vs highway etc).
I run 38/40 (and am trying 38/42 as I'm a bit overweight these days) on Michie Pilot Road 4's.
Anything lower - especially in the front - has a definite under-inflated feel
When I get the Metzelers fitted I will see what the guy recommends pressure-wise.
