I've not used 1 but heard enough horror stories about them
You can get a 4° ignition advancer wheel .
Or search in here as there is a free cheap mod to the back plate to give you the same affect.

I have used TRE(not that same). No problems and not much benefit.
I prefer that adjustable back plate mod. I use 2° now.

Just a question on the advice not to both fit a TRE AND file the holes on the backing plate.

If you do the backing plate mod, your timing is 4 degrees extra advanced even in the top few gears but still in effect only about standard in first 4 gears. So this says the engine can take an overall extra 4 degrees advance from its normal fully advanced setting as people are happily running in top gear all day with 4 degrees advance.     (So total maximum advance is 4 degrees)

If you fit a TRE, it will only bring increase the advance up in first 4 gears to be same as it already runs in 5th/6th
(So total maximum possible advance with both TRE and backing plate mod is still only 4 degrees above standard (same as backing plate mod) , and 7 degrees more than its retarded setting)

What am I missing here.

Wow - a retard eliminator.
If only you could buy such things, how much simpler life would be...
I could use one almost every day ;)

I believe you can buy them in a selection of calibres, but it's illegal to use them for that purpose unfortunately.

Fuel Injection i reckon a great idea, lethal injection would be another great idea. Solve a lot of problems.

Hi.
I've had that particular S-TRE unit fitted to our 1400 for about 5 years now. I did notice the extra power in the 1st 4 gears to start with. Just got used to it now though.
We have done several 3000+ mile European trips and never had a problem. I decided to use this unit as apposed to filling the back plate because I thought as we do a lot of touring the back plate method would over advance the timing in 5th and 6th too much and may course the motor to run hot. Maybe creating other problems.
And if it dose go wrong it's easy to remove and return to normal.
Maybe good if your a long way from home.
Just my thoughts anyway.
