Title: No charge when hot
Post by: Will s on Monday, 15 March 2021, 04:47 AM
Have a problem where the bike is charging ok when cold but when hot it's not .
Checks completed
Restiance at stator terminals 0.6
Continuity from stator terminals to ground , none
Battery test  check when cold 13.7-14
Battery test when hot after riding 12.1 was lowest
Stator voltage output idle 20v , 5000 Rpm 50v
Yet to check reg/ rec
Stator or do I look deeper ?
Also can't seem to find any replacement stators in oz or available cheap ones overseas atm .
Any suggestions ?
Thanks

I'd check the reg/rec & then check it again when hot. I had a car doing exactly the same thing years ago & it was the diode pack (the reg part of reg/rec) failing when hot.

As for stators, each time mine fails I get it rewound rather than replaced.

Will, look under recommended suppliers. BJ posted contacts for bloke in Bris.

You might be onto something .
A recheck of stator with the multimeter setup correctly shows a in spec stator .
For the Aussies this mob has mosfet regs look to be a direct plug in , even though part numbers don't line up .

It's possible for stators to fail when hot too, but it's not something I've personally seen.

It has to be one of those two parts anyway.

If me, id replace both just for knowing its fixed. Forseti just a brand name for chinese made but all good reviews. Lots of others but mostly lots more bucks. I think stator rewind BJ did was a really good price. PM him, hell tell you.

To check the stator properly you need to do an insulation test to earth, multimeter is not capable of that.

The tests in the manual include checking each yellow wire to earth, is there more to it than that for a full test?

As I said insulation test (pressure test) where higher voltage is put on coil and reads any leakage to earth this could happen after heating up.

Thanks, makes sense. I just hadn't heard of that before.

It will also test your insulation between each coil, btw only members of the secret society of electrical engineering are supposed to know this so don't tell anyone else, thats a good meter for the money.

Hi Guys, I have similar issue which may be related to the OP's query.

K2 model
Stator recently replaced + new magneto cover (bike dropped at low speed on gravel smashing cover and damaging stator coils)
New Yuasa battery
Battery fully charged - with ignition on 12.62V
Battery reading with engine running 14.12V

Test ride for 40 mins (no lights on, apart from LED indicators and brake light) no problems apart from the acceleration being a bit bumpy towards the end of the ride
Turned off bike, tried to restart – not enough power, just lights and clicking

Battery reading with ignition on/engine off was 9.38V (engine hot - post ride)
Tested the three yellow wires from the generator and each of them are showing 1.2 ohms

I haven't tested the Rec yet as it's in a difficult position to test (my bike is in a mate's business workshop so I got thrown out when they closed for tea).

Any ideas on what could be causing the issue?

TIA

Mikey

I'd say to check all the connections you've had apart & the earth wires.  Then charge that battery (or do that first) as it will not like being at 9.38 volts.

So, got a charged battery now, spin her up & check charging again & rectifier.
