on the old org we did how to drill out high pressure filter in tank. anyone know how to post it. one of the best mods ive done. Snapey made a beautiful bracket for filter. locates at rear of tank. mines been on a while, just open up and clean out. always know that filter is clean and free flowing. just makes life easy and knowing you can clean , a major plus for me.
If be interested in seeing that. Intriguing.
Yeah, me too, im interested in this. My bike stood with water in the tank for years before she came to me and every few months i have to strip down the tank to clear the rust out... There is less and less everytime but still.

Have a read of this thread Jay http://gsx1400owners.org/forum/index.php?topic=430.0 - within it there are also details of the stuff you can get from Frosts to reseal the tank :onya:
Yep, i have seen that. I have already halted the rust from getting worse, its the debris already in the tank that is the problem..
Good instructions on drilling the fuel pump on the DL1000 forum ... Admin, can I suggest saving this somewhere please. http://www.vstrom.info/Smf/index.php/topic,6105.0.html
Also a couple of pics of my external filter.
Stickied and marked as "Tech Tip" Pete, so making it easier to locate in future :onya:
I'm happy with that mod as well.
Grog found the filter that Snapey, Grog and myself have used a 30micron reusable 5/16 barb ProFlow, use 5/16 EFI hose, EFI hose clamps and you can re-use the quick disconnect tank fittings if you just carefully
cut horizontally through the old hose at the fitting.
As Snapey mentions above read through here to see details on how to drill out our filter - http://www.vstrom.info/Smf/index.php/topic,6105.0.html.
Even if you don't do the mod, changing out the fuel line to new EFI line is a good idea in my opinion.
Any other proposals for external filter?
@Andre share this DeatschWerks filter- https://www.deatschwerks.com/sites/www.deatschwerks.com/files/DATA/DWFF70%20Tech%20Sheet.pdf but it's quite big and I can't find it in Europe.
@RickC share filter what is only 30μ, may be it's enough, but I like to belive 10μ is better...
Any other options?
Northern, if you dont like Proflow, check out Golan from usa. 10 micron & 200psi. Around $50.
Thank you Grog. I may like what I saw and read. And may ahve a try this one if I find cheap delivery - Amazon want ~44€ to deliver
For now, I just order ~10€ MANN MWK 44 filter, what is used OEM replacement on BMW, Triumph and some other motorcycles.

If not, this is a German dealer who carries them https://www.turbozentrum.de/In-line-fuel-filter-element-and-housing-kit-stainless-steel-10-micron-8AN70mm-Universal (https://www.turbozentrum.de/In-line-fuel-filter-element-and-housing-kit-stainless-steel-10-micron-8AN70mm-Universal) site is in English too.
That filter is the only one that fits MY requirements (micron, flow, ss-filter element, size, serviceable) that I have found so far. Certainly there should be other options available.
Have read multiple places that fuel injectors need 10 micron. . I know some here have 30 micron filters put in and seem happy with it.
I know those VKM motors. The business owner is drag-racer and was (is) v6 cars European record owner. They are basically performance cars builders.
http://www.vkmmotors.ee/en/vkm-racing/
But they only sell DW fuel pumps...
Thx for German link. Saw it - it will cost me more than 100€ to order from there, and AN lines have to be added...
but who knows - money is to spend :)
The MANN MWK 44 will probably be just fine. Can buy a few for that money.
But then, as you say, money is there to spend
Turbozentrum with magnet sure sounds good. my Proflow, have had apart and checked a few times. just a blow out with air gun, no probs. bike definately runs perfect. dropping pressure Northern, its your problem. youll be amazed when fixed.

Hi Northern,
There are a few other filters listed if you go through the VStrom thread https://www.vstrom.info/Smf/index.php/topic,6105.0.html
Cheers,
Rick
Hi Rick,
Will read this VStrom thread more (never get past the first page :) )
For a moment, I install on my bike MANN-FILTER MWK 44 (analog of MAHLE KL145) - standart filter for some BMW, Triumph and some other european bikes. Cost me 10.41€
But unfortunately I was not able to fit it under the tank, so it's looking not good:
But this is IN-TANK filter, and I'm thinking of possibilities to install it inside the tank, instead of OEM filter solution. The bigget issue is to fit all this throw the pump mount hole in the tank...
Another solution I'm seriously considering GOLAN MINI, filter. But there is an issue, I could not find AN6 option (out of stock everywhere and GOLAN web page is down...) There is AN4 option, but then there is no AN4 to 8mm adapter (fuel rail) and there have to be additional adapters...
There is also 5/16 filter option... But AN fittings looking better
So - decisions, decisions... But so fare I have filter under my seat :)
Most importantly: your bike is running top :onya:
Looked at the Golan a while back (last year), web site was nonfunctional as it is now. Well, you do get listings from various other websites from there about all kind of stuff.
What is the issue with the fitting of the Mann? I assume it's about no right angles for the filter-hose connection. Or is the diameter to large too?
MAN (MAHLE) filter barrel is Ø50mm x 58mm with 18mm fittings on both sides.
It may be possible to fit it right after the tank output but I'm not sure fuel hose will bend properly on such small distance. it would be better to use hard 90° fitting, but when I was trying I use ~10cm hose between output and filter there was no space between tank and air-box.
Thank you
@northern I looked at this closer today and I couldn't see how to even fit a 50 diameter filter. 40 at the max. Don't know how I got to think 50 mm would work.
Looking at a filter right now and shot a few questions to the seller. Will see. I don't get why they generally skimp on info that is essential IMO. Guess they don't bother with the cheaper ones.
Just had look at my set up, been a while. No 90 degree bends , all straight. My filter fits under tank hold down bracket, front behind frame rail, rear just in front of air filter. Hoses not overly bent. From memory, tank up and only a couple of trials to get it right.
Anything longer than the filter I use & the bends might be tight.
Thanks Snapey. A pic says more than ...
I assume it's the PFE610-05 Proflow filter!? What is its length (with and without barbs)?
@Snapey - this is nice solution, if only filter will fit in. You just cut OEM line to install filter inline?
I was thinking try fit filter more close to pump, maybe using 90° OEM line connection...
Anyway - find and ordered on eBay
Golan Mini filter with 8mm fittings (eBay item number:331587160750). It's barrel should be Ø38mm .
Thx to
@grog , who post this option here
So, my idea from previous post, will not work.
On a picture, ruler is almost at the same place on a frame and tank. There is no place for filter, if it's barrel is bigger then Ø40mm... Golan should be 1.5'' - there is a slight chance it will fit there.
Also, OEM fuel line fitting could be reused with 8mm (5/16'') fuel hose. Just have to carefully cut it from OEM plastic line.
Northern, think i did use original fitting at front now youve jogged my memory. Filter will fit just behind frame tube on rhs of first pic. One going across.
Interesting mod, will have a look how my HP in tank filter is looking after 35,000km and 15 years ( to my knowledge it's never been changed).
If this is a mod that only costs around 50 to 100 bucks it's worth doing. Also like the idea of easy access and regular cleaning / replacement.
Found this on line:
"Resistance to Fuel Contamination - Quality of the Medium. Dirt particles and contaminants in fuel
represent a potential danger to the fuel injectors. They are to be avoided in order to preserve the correct
function of the injectors. The dirt content in the fuel system must therefore be minimized via a suitable
filter. Recommended filter quality: nominal rating 5µ, minimum 82% capture efficiency according to ISO/TR
19438; dirt particles >35µ are not permissible. The basket filter in the injector serves only to catch
residual particles. Nonconformance of the recommended filter quality can cause damage to and failure of
the components"
Basically Bosch recommends 5 to 8 micron pre injector filters.
Interestingly they also mention that Stainless steel filter elements rated at 10 micron allow up to 25 micron particles through.
Website is: http://help.injectordynamics.com/support/solutions/articles/131145-fuel-system-filtration
Interesting article. 5 micron for direct injection and 10 micron for the older type injectors (our 14) has been recommended by various sources. As to the SS disc type, 2 days ago I have seen a clogged one (Golan) where the disc had "collapsed". Another person had this happen too. However, the collapsing of these filter elements happend in high powered cars with high flow fuel pumps.
This led me to get a Mahle KL 145. It's the equivalent of the Mann MWK 44. These are direct replacements for BMW, Triumph, Ducati, and others. Triumph is said to use these, puts their name on it and sells them for big money.
Interesting bit about the filter placement as close to the fuel rail as possible when using rubber hoses. Have to revisit my placement (behind right side panel).
I like Mann filters, I use Mann fuel filters in my LR D4. Had a quick google and found these 10 micron IND line filters "https://rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?mpre=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ebay.com.au%2Fulk%2Fitm%2F162522411711"
Dimensions seem OK, but I haven't tried to look for a spot to put it.
I will also have a look at the Mahle KL145.
I wanted the Mann filter but the local guy around the corner could only get the equivalent Mahle.
Before I do the mod I will first try to give the HP filter a good cleaning and retest the flow. I had 950 ml in 30 seconds, which is 20 % shy of the 1200 ml it should have.
Even though the filter and the hose will fit under the RH side panel, it will be a hassle to take the tank off. Not a nice looking fitting that northern did with the filter under the seat, but I like the ease when taking the tank off.
If cleaning will not give me the results I want, filter will likely go under the seat. If I like it, it will stay there unless it will give me a hassle with taking the battery out. If, at the end I am not satisfied with any solution, I get the original replacement when the budget allows.
You blokes are making this way too hard. Weve explained how to do it. Works for quite a few of us. No improvement really needed, mine works fine.
Your view
@grog. I will not use a 30 micron filter nor one with a disc nor a sintered filter element. My "problem" :whatever:
Andre, your bike, agree do it your way. No point if youre not happy. Post when finished, im always open for ideas.
There are plenty of ideas on the forum. Trouble for me is that there is no solution that suits this picky German. Might have to go for a compromise
Cleaned both filters and got a slight improvement (1050 vs.950 ml).
Andre, if you can find a 10 micron, replaceable filter, 40mm or less in diameter, ill be there. i searched long and hard. i dont agree what whoever said about filter near rail. its filtered wherever. most cars these days have filter in tank, lots of rubber hose used up near motor. filter in tank a silly idea, costs a lot to replace. time to do plus cost of filter. we do it lots at work, some replacements nearly a thous. dollars. jeeps, ford mondeo just 2. old in line worked just as well, 40 bucks.
QuoteThis isn't a big concern in OEM fuel systems which mostly have hard lines
I haven't cut the original hose, but it is certainly a very hard one. The guys who wrote the article should know what they find in the injectors and it is save to assume that they found rubber in there. They could have kept their mouth shut about it and get more injectors for service in. Maybe they want to not get their own injectors returned under warranty and have a hassle because of improper filtration.
They have a valid point there IMO. The only filter I can find that can potentially be mounted very close to the rail is the Golan Super Mini. Pics I have seen from the collapsed disc and the small surface area it has don't fit my demands :)
I tend to just bite the bullet and buy the original filter assembly.
5¢ from me:
1. OEM line is plastic - I cut mine.
2. I thin, intank filter is better in our case, course we have non-return fuel pressure regulator. Meaning, with external filter, pressure is regulated before fuel pass filter. This may course more pressure drop on rail (when filter is not fresh anymore), comparing to situation where pressure regulator is after filtration.
@Andre your 950ml is much higher when my 400ml was 🙂
This might be stupid question but I've read vstrom forum and some other topics about fuel filter mod and seen some pics where OEM filter housing is cut and opened. How to close it to maintain fuel pressure? Or am I missing something?
@northern Thank you for these 2 pieces of info. Yes, mine is doing quite alright compared to where your's was. Gives me time to save the dough for the OEM :happy1:
@mlivkovich I thought about cutting it open and use plastic welding method (using soldering iron) to close it up. Would have to rig up pressure testing to make sure it is tight.

Suzuki use a pretty good glue on the filter housing and splitting it on the glue line is near impossible without the plastic breaking. Re-gluing without leaks, again near impossible but even if you can you're still stuck with a filter that will fail.
By all means go for a top quality filter and I can't fault the one I use but in the end what ever one you select it will be better than Mr Suzuki's offering.
This may interest some people you can choose your filtration
Could sound a bit daft but when you drill the filter how deep do you drill, just to go through the plastic or deeper in to the filter. Thanks nick.
The thickness of plastic to drill through is not more then 4mm. May be 3mm.
Hope this will help. :hat:
Golan Mini Reusable Filters fuel filter have arrived.
Was searching for AN6 model, but could not find it anywhere. Thought AN4 will be a little bit small. So I choose 5/16 hose model.
Barrel diameter: 34.2mm
Barrel length: 45mm
Total length (including tubes): 75mm
Filtration element diameter: 25.4mm
Golan Products clams this is 10 micron filter. Any idea how to check it?
Because I was absolutely not happy with my external filter placement (http://gsx1400owners.org/forum/index.php?topic=590.msg41028#msg41028), I purchase Golan Mini, and today it was installed.
All it was relatively easy, and I'm quite happy with the result. During the winter, I will think about some bracket, but for now it's OK :onya:
Very tidy job 👊
Been after photos for drilling HP fuel filter re external filter fitment and came across some pics on the Hayabusa.org site.
https://www.hayabusa.org/forum/threads/fuel-filter-mod.175027/
Is this the exact same procedure for the GSX1400 or can someone point me to another site.
I'm having no luck viewing pics on any of the vstrom sites.
Thanks
Same procedure on gsx hp filter housing, I've done it.
Hi all
I am considering doing this mod, has anyone in the UK already done it & if so any recommendations on filter where did you purchase from please?
Thanks

This is the one I've got but with an 8mm barb. Drawings of the bracket are on here somewhere. https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Aeroflow-30-Micron-Billet-Fuel-Filter-1-2-Barb-Black-Finish-2-Length/192245798187?hash=item2cc2be152b:g:ABgAAOSwidlZZh~J
Snapey, they sure do the job. My bike never ran as good before that mod. Coming home tonight, must be a few years since done, thinking how nice this thing just revs thru the range. :)
Thanks for the information :onya:
Getting bits and pieces together to do this mod, does anyone in the UK know where I can get the quick fit push connectors? I don't want to cut the old pipe and risk damaging the original connectors. I want to be able to assemble a complete new system.
The only ones I see listed are 7.89mm where as the originals are marked as 7.95mm...

Think I have found the answer...7.89 mm minimum when new, and 7.95 after being exposed to fuel for a long time, according to the SAE J2044 specification
Glad youre onto it Mate. JIS connecters, High pressure hose and high pressure EFI clamps all thats needed. What filter you using? Cant wait for your ride results, youll be pleased.
This is the filter I am going to use, same as you guys 30micron, slightly longer than your Proflow filters but should fit between the frame rail and air filter. Also using the AN-6 connectors so no bend on the fuel hose. New tea bag and O rings. Just waiting for the quick fit connectors to arrive :onya:
This is my bracket to hold the filter. Different fittings it but might help.
Do these look suitable?

Opinions were out there years ago, 10 micron should be used not 30. Ive never had a problem, if i ever do will just get injectors cleaned, their baskets also catch any crap. Looking fwd to performance reviews. I think youll be happy. I use injector cleaner twice a year, Wynns , only from mechanic shop, retail stuff not as good. Other trick, fill some E10, just 5 litres works, ride it all out then fill with good stuff. Sucks any moisture thru, keeps inside tank spotless. Just what i do.

Hey Grog,
At risk of sounding stupid, why does it make the bike run so much better?
I would say that because the original Suzuki Hi-flow filter is unserviceable so there for over time it gets more and more Clogged and stops optimum fuel flow,
Were as the external filter is serviceable and can be cleaned every few rides or so to keep the fuel flowing optimally, Or along those lines sounds Logical anyway. :)
Thats my thoughts as well.
Did the mod today pretty straight forward. Proflow filter fits nicely between frame crossover rail and rear edge of the tank. Might make a bracket for it later reused the quick connect fittings.
Good job mate easy-Peasy, :onya:
Have you put it back together did you notice any difference, I did pump super quiet and better throttle responce.
Yes, all back together, seemed to fire up easier and idle better, need to go for a ride though to see full rpm range throttle response...
Hi Mate which pro flow filter did you use?
don't worry mate i read rest of post, it helps when you do lol
