Title: Rainy
Post by: grog on Sunday, 13 December 2020, 06:13 PM
Where i live, a low pressure system approaching. Rained all day, low supposed to hit tonight. They call them East Coast Lows, quite a few steps below a cyclone. 150k south of me, has had Londons average rain in 24 hrs. Predicted to hang around another 4 days or so. I can remember someone on here asking if it ever rains in Oz. It sure can, especially here sometimes. The most ever recorded 24 hrs, long time ago, 5ks away, Croamhurst , 907mm. I built my house on 800mm high stumps for a reason.

Despite the forecast we have had virtually none here in Sydney while our north coast has had heavy falls.

Two of my favourite rides involved Irish and the Thunderbolts Way crossing the Great Dividing Range here in NSW.

The Australian colony was so poor we couldn't afford our own place names so we borrowed "Gloucester, Stroud, New England, Newcastle etc from the UK. Lucklily we are now able to use the "blackfella" place names and we have grown up.

Anyway I digress.

On one trip Irish and I travelled to Tamworth NSW ( named after Tamworth in Staffordshire) for a weekend of classic motorcycles and convivial good times. it was a great weekend and we had a great time riding the mountain roads on our 1980s bikes.

The weather had been kind all weekend but as Irish peeled off to his warm snug home I battled torrential rain for the last 100 km to get home.

It definitely rains here in Oz and sometime comes down in buckets. This is often a country of extremes and not every ride is blue sky and perfect sunsets. I hate it when the rain is so heavy you can hardly see through the helmet visor

Johno, yeah i hated heavy rain, then discovered hail, then discovered snow. Cradle Mountain in Tas. to wherever in snow. Coldest ive ever been. Couldnt even get my gear off on my own, shook for hours. Maybe that was a pleasant day in UK.

We did Cradle Mountain a few years ago it was a ride and then on to Queenstown.
Mount Wellington was about 30 degrees C at bottom when at the top it was freezing and sleet.

Myself, Snapey and Beast rode back from MCR from Bathurst in the pissing rain, Snapey decided to split at the Putty Road back to Sydney and nearly had a heart attack in the middle of nowhere.

That's one ride I won't forget in a hurry. Stupid me thought the new Aldi rain gear would keep the water out but it was like blotting paper. Soaked to the skin, freezing cold & half way along the Putty I get severe chest pains. Not a fun trip.

Went to the inaugural ( and probably only) Bike Australia magazine rally at Genoa in Vic in the I think early to mid 80s, Pissed rain all the way there, Pissed rain the whole time there, Pissed rain the whole way home, camp ground was flooded, wet weather gear back then was shit as were tents you could carry on a bike, never been so wet for so long in all my life.

Yeah I'm catching the train to work as long as this weather is going, can't afford to be drenched when I arrive at work.

At least the heavy rain ought to wash the petrochemicals off the roads.

I was slinging chains over a load of steel today in the worst rain/wind I've ever experienced. I was so wet I looked like I'd showered in my uniform, I asked for a fresh shirt and trousers from our storeman. No questions asked and I was warm and dry again  :onya: :onya:

Different story a bit further south

Would have been a great day for a ride on the Waterfall Way though.
Newell Falls look spectacular with a decent water flow.

No one will be travelling on Waterfall Way, I just watched a movie of the Newell Falls covering the whole roadway. It will be closed after for repairs I'm sure.
