Title: Failed MOT
Post by: Big Phil on Thursday, 19 November 2020, 08:06 AM
So It's been a good few years since I've had to put a bike through an MOT. Are LED indicators/lights okay to pass an MOT

should be - my FJR passed last week and has LED side light headlights - standard indicators though but Ive had bikes pass with LED indicators so as long as they flash correct rate and are the required distance you should be good to go fella

LED Indicators should be fine, likewise an LED sidelight/tail light - never had any issues with mine. However if you have put an LED headlight bulb in, I'd swap it back to a normal headlamp bulb for MOT purposes, as LED headlight bulbs are not legal, and thus could fail an MOT.

Ring your garage & ask before you take it. It's pretty much up to the tester, as all they really look at is the beam pattern.

The place I used just asked what the noise was due to the fan on the LED light.

Here's a link to the rules and regs:

https://www.gov.uk/guidance/mot-inspection-manual-for-motorcycles/4-lamps-reflectors-and-electrical-equipment

Section 4.1.4 (right at the end)
So LEDs OK, HID converts not OK.

Mine passed last week with Led bulb - I did ring the garage first to check and on line  :)

So glad we don't have MOT for motorcycles in Holland

Looks like the rules have been updated recently as now LED conversions will fail as well as HIDs.
New text:
'Some motorcycles may be fitted with high intensity discharge (HID) or light emitting diode (LED) headlamps. Existing halogen headlamp units should not be converted to be used with HID or LED bulbs. If such a conversion has been done, you must fail the headlamp.'

I asked a certified MOT tester a couple of weeks ago about this and he said no one as far as he knew would fail a bike with LED indicators or light bulbs. Any tester would however fail a bike if the indicators that were fitted were incorporated in the rear light as they would be too close together. I didn't ask about HID bulbs so don't know if they would fail those.

My 14 has led bulbs and indicators fitted and is due to be MOT'd next month. I will let you know how I get on.

I would agree with that as the reflectors for halogens are completely wrong for led bulbs.  So converting a halogen lamp assy with an led bulb does not give the right light spread.  Therefore replacing the complete headlamp assembly with a sealed beam led (with suitably designed reflector) would pass your MOT (RWC where I'm  from)

Someone asked the same question on the Bandit Forum a couple of days ago. The rules regarding LED lamps have changed from Jan 1st 2021.

Good job I've still got H4 bulbs in stock then, I'll have to put it back in for the MOT in March. But I'm not riding around blind at night all year by leaving it there.

Guess were lucky here, no annual checkovers. Not even a lot of police at moment, lots on border duty due to covid. Big change to around 7 yrs ago, packs of bike cops, supposedly targeting bikie gangs. Wasnt fun to get pulled up then, every little rule was used.

That all changed again on 1st January 2021 @Dusty ST and LED headlight bulbs are now categorised the same as HIDS and are illegal for an MOT

https://www.gov.uk/guidance/mot-inspection-manual-for-private-passenger-and-light-commercial-vehicles/updates

See Updates January 2021, section 4.1.4 which reads as follows:

4.1.4 Headlamps - Compliance with requirements - Changed sentence from 'Existing halogen headlamp units should not be converted to be used with HID bulbs. If such a conversion has been done, you must fail the headlamp.' to 'Existing halogen headlamp units should not be converted to be used with high intensity discharge (HID) or light emitting diode (LED) bulbs. If such a conversion has been done, you must fail the headlamp.'
