Title: Chain Splitter/Riviter
Post by: Big Phil on Saturday, 31 October 2020, 04:22 AM
Hi, I need a chain splitter/riviter and see there are plenty around on EBay for anything from £8 upwards.

Can anyone kindly recommend a relatively cheap one that works.

Thanks in advance
Phil

Cut it with an angle grinder, then hit it with two hammers.

Bought this 2 months ago, works great! You just have to grind rivet before splitting the chain, I doubt it will press the pin without grinding it. I bought it firstly for riveting, you can cut chain anyway

Well so far I have Hooli who is doubling down on THOR with two hammers 🔨  or Mlivkovich and his chain splitter. I need time to think 🤔

I have this same set, works fine (from memory - been a while)  I know you can get better / more expensive ones, but this works.

Thanks Guys  much appreciated for all the input. If I'm honest I was trending towards Hooli's Double hammer THOR approach as back on the day that worked for me. However, older and wiser will go with the chain splitter.

Thanks again guys! Great forum full of great guys pulling together👏👏👏

I bought this one, bit more expensive, but this one does also re-rivet as well as split the 530 chains we run.  I've tried the Thor approach and just too clumsy/risk of smacking the wheel, sprocket or swing arm and damaging them

The cheap £8 ebay ones do work and will do the job half a dozen times before falling to bits (they are £8 for a reason).  I have one and as I don't swap chains every year it's worked fine so far, been used three times in 7 years so I expect another four years out of it before buying a new one.  An expensive one will just sit in the tool box for years unused.

This is my tool of choice for rivetting chains. Good bit of kit that I've had for years and done numerous chains with.
Just cut the old one off with a slitting disc/angle grinder.

DON'T FORGET TO LOOSEN FRONT SPROCKET NUT BEFORE CUTTING OLD CHAIN OFF!!
