Title: Would you encourage your wife to ride?
Post by: Mick_J on Tuesday, 13 October 2020, 07:17 PM
Following on from a post by Big Phil on would you let your kids ride I thought why not.
After we had been married for about six months I decided my wife needed her own bike so bought her a Kawasaki Z200.  We then spent a few nights on the standby parade ground at the back of the camp I was stationed at teaching her how to use the throttle, gears, clutch and brakes before we went out on the open road, so for a few months we took things easy.  I was posted from Avon (as it was then) to Norfolk so we had to ride across the country which was no problem for her.  After a couple of years riding a number of different sub 250 bikes she took her test and passed first time.  Within a month she was riding my GSX1100, at eight stone wet-through that bike fuckin flew, much to the disgust of some of the local yocals who though they were fast. Then she had a kettle for a while (but I sold it without her knowledge) and then she had a Les Harris Bonneville (pile of shite) before having a Harley 1200 sportster.  After a bad crash on the Harley (A bloody SMIDSY, which broke her jaw and skull) she switched to a Honda CB500 (her favourite bike) and she racked up many miles commuting from Peterhead to Aberdeen for work (about 350 miles a week).  Then I bought her an SV650 which we had modified with Ohlin's suspension set for her weight, braided lines etc and she had that for around 9 years before giving up riding her own bike and became a pillion.  She owned ten bikes and rode solo for over 26 years and was a very good safe rider, I just wish she still had her own bike as we had some great times.
Have any of you got your wife's into riding bikes or is it something only reserved for yourself?

Not ever owned a wife   LOL. But rented quite a few girlfriends :mwink: :mwink: over the years who rode their own bikes. I've always encouraged girls/ladies riding, as it may make car drivers more aware of motorcycles in general as it may be their wife, mother, sister, aunty etc. etc.  :hat: :hat:

I've had no chance at all to converting the good lady wife to bastard bike as she calls it lol she has had one outing and said I've tried it but she is a very good driver but it's not to her liking as bike go shame because I think when your lady into bike riding it make some days out very nice  but heho not to be single and bike time it is.  My daughter and son love them but they live to far up north  to just jump on they do when they come to visit so that good  :onya:

I've tried to entice my wife on to my bikes for a number of years now with absolutely no sign of any interest whatsoever. She does like driving cars though as that doesn't mess her hair up and there is no need for wearing stupid looking leather clothing and boots😂 To be fair her real issue is being totally out of her own control and completely reliant on the rider. In addition there's also the fact she suffers from a very bad back. Wish she would give it a go though.

I did & she brought a GN250. She was making great progress learning to ride & was enjoying it.  Then there was a bike crash near us, a fatality. Very sad, it was a new lady rider & she made a mistake & was killed. That shook her, but it was 'friends' at our holiday park that really put her off, they knew the person & gave her graphic details of what happened & that she was a new rider & just getting confident (like her) & she ended up dead. That put her off & she never went on her bike again, no matter what I said, those images must have stuck with her & she switched off.
Pissed me off really, as was looking forward to both of us riding in retirement (still a way off though)  Sold the GN & she won't even get on the back with me any more either.   So, I'm single when riding.

I wouldn't date a woman who didn't ride or enjoy pillion.

Like you Col I was still really hoping to get my girl on a bike especially now I am virtually retired. When I got the 14 earlier this year I had a real go at encouraging her but still she won't entertain the bike. It would of been awesome having days out to the coast with her on pillion but hey ho! I too remain a lone rider.

As it happens, my wife luvs it on the back, always has since i first took her out on my S3 400 back in the days of disco`s and snakebites, so long as its not cold!

Would i encourage her on a bike of her own? Noooo waaay, she`d kill herself, despite the fact that she`s a great driver.

I must dig up the story she wrote about her learning attempt and it'll be clear why.
