Put a camera on the back of the bike when I went out a couple of weeks ago for a ride. Audio is horribly distorted as I need to dial down the microphone sensitivity. However, there are some strange noises and I don't know where to start looking. They may well have always been there, but I can't hear them in the helmet due to wind noise.
When I had the back wheel off to replace the chain, the rear wheel bearings felt smooth and free. Also some clunks around the one minute mark.
Ideas on what I can look for?

What mileage ?
Did you check the sprocket carrier bearing as they can wear out at 18000 miles .
Hope you find and fix the problem .
It might just be how a bike sounds but you never normally hear it as it's behind you .
Just under 13K miles. 2K in my ownership.
I may have missed the carrier bearing. I will get the back wheel out and check :onya:
@numbskull the original standard bearings are not sealed and are open on the inside so the weather can get into them .
I replaced all the bearings at 20k with double side sealed bearings and then replace sprocket carrier bearing when I replace the chain and sprockets .
Yeah sprocket carrier bearings can last less than an oil change, they are crap even when you fit proper sealed bearings. I always change them with the chain & sprockets (if they've lasted that long).
Had the back wheel off and the carrier bearing feels OK. What I can feel is the internal tube between the two wheel bearings moving as I stick my finger in to rotate and making a slight rasping / contact sound at certain points in the rotation. Should this tube rotate, or should it be pinched between the inner faces of the bearings (so that it rotates on the the axle)?
As the axle is tight in there, any grease on the surface won't make it in there in any quantity.
From what I can see, everything looks in good condition with no signs of rust or corrosion. Should I try to get the bearings out, and is it a pain?
I can also hear from the video (and the others I have) that the noise only happens unloaded. As soon as there's acceleration or a reasonable amount of deceleration, it is quiet.
It does sound like the carrier bearing with those symptoms, I wouldn't say it's shagged, just on the way out. Mine is probably the same, but I'm deaf as & wearing a helmet I can't hear a thing . .
Pardon?
I`ll probably get slated for this, but, a microphone will pick up noises which we can`t usually hear, and very often those noises aren`t coming from where we may think they are. Don`t get paranoid about it - if the bike runs well, is smooth, and you don`t `feel` any issues through the frame and pegs (knocking/grinding), then likely as not, there is no problem! :whistling:
I have never changed a carrier bearing in over 50,000 miles and still have original wheel bearing, have had a couple of different rear wheels but put the original bearing back in.
I've had a sprocket carrier bearing go at 22000miles and changed a few sets at below that mileage that sounded terrible .
Either your lucky or I'm very unlucky along with few others .
Lucky Irish, now where have I heard that before?
numbskull, i had a listen. Not much id be worried about. Microphone noise i reckon. Change carrier bearing anyway, not much bucks or difficulty.

Bike sounds proper pooped, I'll give you a couple of quid to take it off your hands before it gets too expensive to fix.
I had a similar noise Seth pointed me to the swing arm brake calliper brace. I had overtightened it. Worth a check
There's some progress. The front sprocket was rattling when rotated on the splines of the gearbox output. I undid it with relative ease just in gear without a chain on there. I suspect that it wasn't at 115nm.
It couldn't have undone itself as there the speedo magnet thingy on the end of the shaft with a hex bolt through the centre.
Might explain some of the clunking.
Yeah, it's not unknown for the front sprocket to loosen itself off. I always put a bit of white marker from the sprocket to the nut to see if there's any movement, easy to see if there is as the line doesn't match up any more.
They all do that sir. Lots of threadlock is your friend as well as checking it occasionally.
My sprocket carrier bearing, as removed 24k mls
Pfft try harder, this bearing managed 9k miles. I'll never buy 'All Balls' again.
Oh & yes all that 'stuff' came out of it as I removed it.
Bloody hell! I bet those 2 bearings were noisy and rough.

Just wondering how you get noise from a tight caliper brace?
Mine was creaking a bit, I kept thinking it can't be the carrier bearing as it's too new. Then I finally looked...

Yup you beat me! but I broke my PB (private road) with that bearing in situ..
How on earth can sprocket carrier bearings be changed with new ones? Thank you. My just bought bike has 64k miles so worth checking them I think.
Mate, easy to change. Buy a good brand, SKF, NSK, Timken,Koyo etc. Not AllBalls.
Sprocket carrier bearing is a weak point on !4 and Busa ( the same bearing).
That's why I use quality brands only ( Koyo, SKF, FAG.).
Two rear tyres / one bearing in my use.
On Busa forums are topics how to build stronger bearings to sprocket carrier .
Any links T24 Ive seached but empty.

I try to find it. It can also be Finnish Busa forum.
