My thanks in advance to any info supplied.
My (2) brand new batteries have stopped charging / run to almost flat in the bike.
There is no increase in voltage across battery when increased revs to 5k.
Pulled the left cover and the bolt holding it all is TIGHT.
Have done all Haynes manual electrical tests and everything including reg/rec passed except - TEST CONTINUITY BETWEEN EACH THREE TERMINALS AND EARTH.
There should be no continuity between any of the terminals and earth.
Each of the 3 wires coming from the alternator FAILED the to earth continuity test.
Haynes manual says the alternator stator coil assembly is faulty and should be renewed BUT before condemning the stator coils check the fault is not due to damaged wiring between the connector and the coils. Can anyone provide a photo of what I'm looking for with this and can I test it?
New stator + freight about $550.
Cost to rewind?? Reliability of rewind?? (Recommendations for Bris/Sunny Coast area)
Do these things just suddenly not work?
Do they break/ fall apart???
Thanks
BJ, continuity test from plug to coil just ohms on multimeter. Thinks theres a place in Caloundra does rewinds, ill check for you tomorrow. Sounds like yours fried.
Carmo Electronics worth a phone call Mate. Sydney. Doesnt give price on their site.
Sounds like the fault last time my stator went. When I popped the LH cover off the engine I could see the wiring to the stator had burnt out & was shorting to the casing. The previous one was shorting to earth too, but I couldn't see much damage on that one. I think it'd melted the insulation within the coils of the stator so it shorted through it's 'frame'.
Just to sanity check it before you condemn it, have you run the bike up with the stator unplugged & checked for AC voltage between each yellow wire? should be 50-60v at 5k rpm from memory. I think I saw about 20v at idle when I tested a good one.
Thanks Hooli.
I did that test and got exactly 60v on each of the three wires as per the manual.
I think if the short to earth was an issue then one of the coils wouldn't give voltage, but don't quote me on that I don't really understand that bit of the bike well enough.
What type of multimeter are you using digital or analogue (needle).
Digitall
Make sure your range setting is on ohms for the yellow to earth test, the reading should be OL or whatever your meter reads when leads are apart.
Try the buzzer and if it makes a sound there is something wrong.
If the meter is in the Mohms range you may get a reading on the meter.
Hope this makes sense.
Definitely got the buzzer on each of the three wires.
That not good, I suggest you check along the wiring as Hooli mentions above to see if the flying leads from coils are shorting if so that would be a cheaper fix.
