Title: Arai helmets
Post by: Mick_J on Monday, 06 July 2020, 07:21 PM
Anyone recognise the name of the Arai I am modelling?  I has to be a 8-9 year old design by now.  Cannot find anything on T'Interweb.

I used to love my arai's but they changed something in the design with the chaser and didn't fit me anymore.
I switched to shoei helmets .

Always used Schuberth. I´d like to try an Arai, or even Shoei. Someone told me the Arais can make some noise because of those side panels. Any comment on that ? Thanks.

My shoei is much quieter than any of the arai's I had but they were older models they were also much heavier too.

First ride today with a Shoei Neotec 2 that I picked up last Friday, Eerily quiet compared to every other helmet I have used, and warm, first time pinlock user, very impressive  and there is no ambiguity with the vents, first time ever I have been in no doubt whether they were open or closed

Yeah vent closure is great - toward visor = closed - no matter what vent it is.

Aas for quiet - I find the opposite.  Mine is quite loud co,mapred with my previous full face (non modular) shoei.
Its the one area I am really disappointed in.

first time shoei for me, always had Arai then went Bell Modular, then Shark evoline, being a spec wearer, the Modular makes life a lot easier as I always had to cut channels in the cheek pads to insert specs

Arai helmets are noisy and it's not just the side pods but when you put one on its the most comfortable helmet and it's it's way plusher than anything else on the market.  My wife uses a Shoei NXR and says it's quite quiet when the vents are closed but bloody noisy with them open.  I think Shoei are a closer match to schuberth in head shape with the Arai chaser X being the only Arai with a similar shape.

The helmet you like, fits your head, thats the best one. Ear plugs take the noise away, ease of use very important. I did like D rings but now found the slide clasp better. Best advice, try them on.

Is side clasp the seatbelt type fastening? if so I used to just lock the strap in as the bit on the end was too big to pull through.

Thanks all for the replies. I´ll keep to what I was thinking of, Shoei Neotec 2 to replace my Schuberth C3 Pro. The worst thing for me on a helmet is noise; on long rides I use ear plugs, but short commutes I find it a hassle. Or maybe I´ll wait a few more months for new EC22.06 (should be coming out now) helmets. Mine´s still OK.

Best tip I ever got is buy the best helmet that fits your head rather than the one that your friends have.
We all have slightly different shapes heads .

Tried on all brands and  types including openface and flip ups.  Shoei GTAirII worked out best for me.  All are basically the same, just go with the one that fits your noggin best.  Re noise, use earplugs.

Btw, the shoei has imho the  best optical clarity of the visor, even with pinlocks and the tinted inner visor down.

Tip: when trying on, ask if you can step outside the shop to see how visibility  is outside, as the lighting in the shop is artificial. I found this makes a big difference.

Is anyone allowed to try on helmets at the moment with this whole covid-19 thing?

Yes, no problem although some shops insist that you wear a disposable balaclava (which they supply).
