Title: Cleaning the Injectors
Post by: Breeze7 on Thursday, 04 June 2020, 08:40 PM
Morning All,

Can anyone recommend an liquid additive to put into the fuel tank to give the injectors a clean/flush out?
There seems to be lots on the market claiming this and that, but mainly say for car engines?

Why don't you just ask which tyres they recommend Breezy  :confused1: their will be a thousand choices. You'd be better off heading to Supercheap or the like and asking the same question.

It says on car engines as the dosing instructions are for car's petrol tank size. Adjust the dosing for your size tank and you are good.

I used injection cleaner (Liqui Moly). The can was good for 3 applications to the 22 liter tank.

However, I don't use it anymore. Had my injectors professionally cleaned and after that use premium petrol which claims having an additive in there that helps keep 'em clean. Money-wise it's about the same for me than treating the 14 once a year with injection cleaner and has the added advantage of containing no ethanol.

Car or bike engine doesn't matter, they are all the same. Just lob some in according to how much the tank holds as said.

I tend to throw the redex injection cleaner in occasionally, because the local cash n carry does it cheap. One bottle says 50-60ltrs, so I make it last two or three tanks. I'm not convinced it does a huge amount but my bike runs sweet so maybe it's helped over the years.

Run a few tanks of Shell V-Power through, the additives will clean the injectors. I ran my 14 on V-Power or BP Ultimate as whilst it didn't need the higher octane, over time it kept the injectors clean and made it run a lot smoother.

I've never used anything but 98ron fuel in all my bikes wether it specifies it or not for that reason of cleaning the injection system and burning any deposits off the back of the valves. I avoid Shell as the detergent they use in Australia has particles too large for motorcycle injectors and some times causes clogging.  :hat:

That sounds strange Chris, you'd assume Shell would have thought of motorcycles as well.  I xdidn't know our injectors were so different.

Motorcycle injectors are smaller than majority of cars Col

Size of the injector shouldn't matter. Clearances within the injector do. General consensus I found on the net is that no particles greater than 10 microns should be allowed to get to the injectors. Some (modern) systems require 5 microns. That's the job of the high pressure filter. I have no idea about the filtering size of the little filters within the injectors.

Would be interesting to know the size of the Shell detergents. I am not going to put Shell (V-Power) in mine as it is by far the most expensive here and not ethanol free (in Germany at least).

For your info details in recommended suppliers section here .
I've used this company and great results at a very good price when I had a clocked injector.

I use the Penrite injector cleaner for petrol from Supercheap Auto in mine about once a year, dosage for a full tank of fuel, and always run on 98RON, usuallly BP ultimate.  Never had any problems.

Thats interesting Del. I have used Acetone as a cleaner for years. How much would you add to a tank full of fuel and how often ?

Am I the odd one out here but in 200,000 kms my bike has never seen an injector cleaner, drinks nothing more than E10 or ULP and still lives to tell the tale. Just lucky I guess.

@Kiwifruit - In general about 50 to 70ml per tank - I get it for about £13.50 for 5 litres - did all my research before started using it many moons ago and never had any issues with pipes breaking down excerta

I'm not convinced they need it, but it's a habit I picked up years ago in cars which did help the first car I used it on. Mine runs on the cheapest fuel too, but not E10 as it's that much slower & thirstier on it it actually costs more per mile.

Have not had trouble with mine in the 65,000kms l've put on it either.
But l am interested in solvents.......
In the 80's during the fuel shortage my old HK Monaro loved a little cocktail of petrol, prepsol (wax & grease remover) and lacquer thinners

Loved those old 2 speeds. Powerglide in Holdens, Fordomatic in Falcons. My Mums Falcon would touch 90 in low but 85 in 2nd. Multiple valve grinds later it got to 400 th miles. Head off in 10 minutes. Rest of motor never touched.

I've found that these work well to clean out injectors, I've only used it on my R6 injectors on my 1600 but I've been meaning to using it on my 1400 injectors, one fouled and I replaced all four with Chinese ones.
