Title: Checked TPS now bike won't turn over
Post by: Nic on Sunday, 16 February 2020, 03:37 PM
Checked the TPS resistance at the grey connector under left cover, all plugs are connected, now the start button does nuthin. All other electrics seem to be working. What the hell, can someone put me out of my misery :frustrated:

Not got the 'check' sign showing on the speedo by chance?  If yes, it's 90% likely the kill switch is in the off position.

Hey Col, nope, now warnings. I pulled the grey connector apart, took resistor readings, joined connector now it won't tune over, starter button is dead. Now this is why i love my old  bikes, I would know what's wrong, this is so infuriating. Is there a fuse for the starter, doesn't seem to be in the fuse box.

I notice the clock is not telling the right time, now, is that relevant, must have disconnected it somehow? Does pulling the grey block apart kill voltage to the clock?

Can you tell me what it does when the key is turned on?  Does the fuel pump prime? do the gauges sweep? 'dash' lights on?   There is a master fuse, not sure where exactly, I've never had to find it.  I'll look it up.

As for the grey plug disconnecting the power to the clocks? dunno, but seems logical.  You got a multimeter there to check for continuity ?

When the key is turned on everything reacts as normal. I can't find a 30A fuse, only the spare, besides, if it was blown there's be nothing.

Ya haven't bumped it into gear by chance when you've been working on the left?   You are pulling in the clutch yeah?

A faulty clutch switch will prevent it from starting.  You can bridge the terminals to take the switch out of the circuit, but it's not good practice to leave it (for weeks etc) bridged as it runs a different map in the ecu.

Yeah Col, holding clutch in, the wires are connected, I think I'll go n short them together and get back, doesn't explain the clock though.

The grey plug could explain the clock.  Does seem bloody odd that a clutch switch could fail at the exact time you were working on the TPS.

Definitely sounds electrical, & something that's happened whilst you've been in there today.   Well,  when was the last time it started & what work has been done since then?   I wonder if it's the grey plug?  Maybe take apart & spray & reconnect?

Yes, possible, anyway Col, thanks for your help mate, the clutch switch has taken a shit. Shorted the wires n away she went. Thanks again.

Funny how the switch was working 10 minutes before I pulled the grey plug, let that be a warning to all, don't go near the grey plug, it'll kill your clutch switch :furious:

So I found out the problem, the switch was good.
I asked on another post the other day what glue to use on oxford grips.
I had some Tarzan's grip that I used but the next day it was still not a solid hold on the grip.
So while test riding the bike today the grip had moved, see pic, this resulted in the clutch lever not going in far enough to engage the switch. The lever went all the way in but for about 10mil so it was not as obvious as the pic suggests.
I now have the grip rock solid with super glue and hopefully this won't happen again, bloody hell.

I was going to suggest to check the connectors are fully home. The clutch interlock switch is a common culprit, dont leave it bridged.  Remove the connectors, clean them  up properly and give the spade connectors a gentle crimp and push them back on, ensure they seat home too.
