Title: New member from Australia
Post by: Nic on Monday, 10 February 2020, 01:52 PM
Hi there everybody, just checking in to say hi, 65 year old just bought an 07 1400.
Been wanting one for a few years, I owned a 1250 Bandit a few years back but I couldn't cope with the wind noise that only I seemed to find a problem. I loved the bike but the wind noise was a deal breaker for me. I just sold my old Honda CB750 K2 which has allowed me to buy the 14. I also have a 76 Z900 kwaka which I'm told I'm not allowed to sell.
The 14 has 61,000Ks and looks to be in good er, nick. The front tyre while still having plenty of tread is out of shape and the bike rides accordingly, I have tyres on order, going with Angel GTs as that's what I had on the Bandit n that bike rode so well, right now it has Michy 4s. Today I fitted the speedo healer that I had stashed from the Bandit, speedo was out by 9K at 100kph. I hope to fit the gear indicator soon but man they ain't cheap these days.
Right then, off to pour a Bourbon n coke, look forward to some banter in the future.
Cheers, Nic.

Welcome Nic .... where about in Oz? Nice looking 14 you've got yourself but there's still going to be some wind noise although much more if you fit a screen.

Thanks for the welcome guys, Snapey, I'm in a small town called Braidwood in NSW, hiway riding for me, wind noise, the bike did have a little screen on it, I took it straight off and can hear a small improvement, I went out today with no ear plugs and I reckon the wind noise wasn't too bad, wack in the plugs n all will be good.
With the bandit I tried all sorts of screens and in the end I realised screens just make things worse. On the bandit you have the fairing and the tank pushing air right into your head, I'm pretty happy with this one so far, apart from the bad front tyre.
There are quite a few similarities between the two bikes.

Hi Nic, welcome to the forum.  Nice K6 there.

Now, looking at the pic, it appears you have some extra gauges there, or is that just something behind it?  Be interested to see a couple of more shots.

More welcomes, thanks fellas. Yes the extra gauge is my gps speedo that I use to calculate my proper speed, I took the pics today and hadn't removed the gps after hooking up the speedo healer. Here's a pic of that.

Great spot Braidwood but if I lived there I'd also have an endure bike for those fire trails. I've spent many pissy weekends staying at the Araluen pub.

I do enjoy the ride down the mountain although it's nothing like the Clyde, less coppas though  :clapping:

 K7 Col?

K6 I reckon, because of the colour scheme, same as mine.  Mine's a 2007 K6, just means it was first registered in 2007.  There are a few 2009 bikes about too, mostly K7's though.

I can't be sure but on this site https://www.suzukicycles.org/GSX-series/GSX1400.shtml (https://www.suzukicycles.org/GSX-series/GSX1400.shtml) if you scroll down to the 2007 model it says the tank now has a redstripe on the tank, which mine does??? and the 2006 doesn't.

Cool, my error.  Thought the K7's has more white on the tank, maybe that's the FE's.  No worries.

Welcome to the forum Nik  :onya: glad to see you've chosen the correct colour  :whistling:
I fitted one of these and it works perfectly, just plug it in.  https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Motorcycle-Gear-Indicator-Red-LED-6-Speed-For-Suzuki-EFI-GSX-R1000-GSX1400/183153568217?hash=item2aa4cda9d9:g:IDsAAOSw5T9aveJZ

Hi MJ, thanks for the link, good price for sure, might get one and then take my time saving for the one that comes with the TRE.

Thanks again for the nice welcome everyone.
The fun begins today, I have the forks off for new seals and bushes, I don't think they have been off the bike from new so after new everything that'll be a good start. I notice the disc pads are all but spent. I need to sand and polish the fork bottoms as the plastic coating is all "forked" up on the leading edges of both. Figure I'll take the tank off n see what's what with the pair system, check plugs, I notice the front tyre is a 2016 so the bike hasn't don'e a lot in 4 years. Probably sync the TBs, I have gauges. The rubber brake hoses look like they need retiring. New brake and clutch fluid.
So a lot to do before I can feel good about the bike. It looks good but I think it will be happy I bought it just in time.
Thanks again for the welcome.

Welcome Nic,
Z900 would be nice, I miss my old CB750.

I know a few people here have them fitted but I don't quite understand the need for a gear selector, the 14 will pull in most gears if you need it to pull harder you click down a gear.

Cheers,
Rick

Welcome Nic good to have you along.
Am of the same mind as RickC re gear indicator. Reckon if its doing 3000 rpm and showning 100 kph its in top gear. Even with 55 profile tyre thats still my rule of thumb.
Anyhoo.... enjoy getting your bike how you like it Nic.

I'm ok with 5 gears but with 6 I just lose track, plus is the ATRE not worth having either?

Welcome Nic  :onya: A nice looking `14 you`ve got there - and great that you`ve kept your `Z` too!

I woudn`t bother with a gear indicator if I were you. I`ve only ever owned one bike with one, (GT750A), and I don`t recall ever looking at it!

Incidentally, I owned a Bandit `12 too, a K3. I`d be interested in your thoughts in comparing the two bikes.....enjoy your `14.

Safe riding

Hi DP, yes well, the price of the gear ind means I won't be getting one soon, it's costing me plenty getting this 14 up to scratch as it is.
The bandit, not sure if you had the 1200 or the 1250 and what are the real differences between the two anyway but there's no doubt my old K7 1250 went quite a bit harder than the 14, now I'm not sure if my 14 is going as it should but that's about all I can say comparing the two so far, I haven't ridden the 14 much, I just got back from Qbn with the new tyres but won't be able to ride it until I have the forks done, sanding and polishing, I've done eons of it on the old Honda and Z and now I'm back at it again, it's pain staking work, I have one fork lower finished, when the other is done then I'll dismantle the forks and overhaul them, don't even know what springs are in there.
The fact that the bike should now lean nicely into corners with the new tyres is something I'm looking forward to. Oh, one other comparison, the 14 is way quieter in the wind noise dept, way better, I'm thinking right now that I'll be keeping the 14, it's plenty powerful for me and it looks good too.
I don't know why manufacturers continue to worry about wind tunnels n shit, why not make some nice looking bikes, the way it is now with the coppas n their ability to take your licence even before you see them, why is high speed stability such an important issue, why not make a few great looking bikes, I still reckon the Z is one of the best looking bikes ever made. Here's mine.

A few on here swear by TRE, you can slot your timing plate which does the same thing, have a look here for comments -
I haven't done it myself but when I get bored I might. There might be another write-up on here somewhere I have seen detailed pics but it
may have been on the old Org.

I'm sure I'll be corrected if I'm wrong but slotting the timing plate is the alternative to the 4 degree advancer and has nothing to do with the TRE.
Title: Re: New member from Australia
Post by: Andre on Thursday, 13 February 2020, 01:02 AM
Snapey is correct.

These are two different things. Advancing the timing will not eliminate the Timing Retardation - it will only shift it. Timing is retarded by the ECU in the lower gears to meet legal requirements. A Timing Retard Eliminator will get rid of this "nonsense" and gets the timing "right" again in all gears. Slotting the timing plate advances the timing over the entire gear range. Slotting the timing plate can also be used to retard the timing (needed for turbo) - slot according to your needs. I believe it was T24 who said that for best results in a standard engine is 2° advance.

A DIY TRE can be done easily for very little $ right at the gear position sensor (GPS). When you do this, you will not be able to use an electronic gear indicator that functions by picking up the voltage from the GPS. Not really true as the gear indicator can still show you the unaltered gears correctly (ie  it will show you the "dreaded"  6th gear) An ATRE will be able to give you complete functionality. There are also ways to DIY an ATRE for little $. There are generic gear indicators that use a pick-up at the gear linkage.
