Title: 12v switched feed.
Post by: Mick_J on Thursday, 16 January 2020, 09:07 PM
I have just fitted a set of heated grips and am looking for a 12v feed to power up a relay, is there a convenient supply under the seat that works off the ignition switch?  I have found a few in the wiring diagram but that doesn't tell where the wire comes up in real money and if easily accessible.

I use horn wire, not sure if good enough for you. Works fine for me.

I've just fitted heated grips and I added a relay activated by the rear light. I figured the lights are always on when the ignition is on, works fine for me. Also I only had to cut into the lamp wiring harness, not the main bike harness, so less potential damage if I screwed it up. Finding a place to stash the relay was a challenge but I got there in the end.

I used a relay with a built-in automotive fuse. Very handy because then I was able to junk the inline fuses that came with the heated grips and the satnav and power them both off the one relay. Here's the one I fitted:

I changed the supplied 30A fuse for 5A, that's all I need for my requirements.

I can add some pics if you like but I can't get to the bike until the weekend.

Nice Fishy, I've not seen a fused relay in that configuration before.  :onya:  I'll be looking for them from now on though - after I've used any regular ones I still have in me electrical box.   :imrgreen:

I used the 'Position Light' connection from within the head light (as nothing connected to it). When ignition switch on, she fires up with 12 volts.

I used this 12V pair to drive my relay that switches on my Digital Voltage Monitor coupled across my battery. Below is the link to where I got the relay from in Australia. It comes with an inline fuse for protection. I used a lower rated fuse as my wires are only rated for a couple of amps for the meter, so I'll like to blow the fuse first before the wires melt if there is any problems.

Hope this helps.

That sounds like a good option. What's a position light? I didn't know about this connection.

Orange wire off the ignition is switched power, or you can pick the same wire up direct out of the fusebox.

Or look at this http://gsx1400owners.org/forum/index.php?topic=1147.0

Thanks for all your help, I opened up the rear light plug an tagged a wire onto the 12v feed so if I remove the heated grips for any reason no wires have been cut or stripped back.
