Hi All,
And hello to everyone from Brissie North Side.
Been riding Suzis for a long time, loved my GSF 1200 (carburettor and no ABS) and got really lucky to welcome my first GSX 1400 in Dec...
I have browsed the forum and loved how this community sticks together, so glad to join and share my little project with you:
- GSX 1400, 2008
- 1 prev owner
- ~3,500km (yes, correct)
- Garaged and not started in about 6-7 years
A good friend of mine passed her on as he can't ride it, with the condition to build her up and ride again.
I am up to the task and get her back to life. So far I have just given her a quick wash and few hours of hand polish of the metal parts to establish where we are.
Open to suggestions how to tackle this project, and I plan starting a Thread with the progress later. Unfortunately, I won't really have time until end of Summer before starting this, but keen to hear your thoughts of how you would approach this.
(Attached a close up prior wash and a full shot after wash / polish; note, this was a first in 6-7 years and while spending hours to get the surface rust off, it's nowhere a full detail!)
Cheers,
Dan
Hi and Welcome.
Welcome aboard Dan & good luck with the project. It's scrubbed up pretty well already.
Great bunch of people here and a wealth of knowledge & info
Welcome - Croeso :)
Welcome to the forum Dan :onya: by the looks of things it shouldn't take too much work to get it back up to spec, I would change the tyres, flush out the hydraulics and change the oil and filter before giving it a proper ride out.
Welcome :hat:
:welcome1:
To all things 1402
All the help you'll need is here .
Good luck
Shouldn't take owt to get that going.
Plugs out, spin it on the starter till the oil light goes out. Plugs in & start it.
Then change oil, filter, tyres, brake n clutch fluid and fork oil. Followed by enjoying it.
I knew a 14 that hadn't run in about 8-9 years. A fresh battery & some fuel was all it took to fire straight up.
Welcome Dan. Good intro. The bikes looking pretty good already. Lucky for you its one of the high performance, high spec and highiy sought after black ones
:onya:
The other guys have you on the right path, tyres, oil, fluids etc. Don't forget to change the valve stems and l would probably look at the filters inside the tank too. While you have the tank in bits there is a mod you can do with a cable tie on the pump. Something to do with a little clip that can pop off.
Good luck with the project, enjoy your bike.
Welcome Dan!
Hi Dan & welcome to the forum. That bike looks lovely already, now the prep to get it back running & working tip top.
It'll all be small regular maintenance stuff (fork oil, all hydraulic fluids, engine oil & filter, check air filter, definitely tyres & maybe new plugs - std ones), to do, plus a new battery & get rid of any remaining fuel & give her a gut full of 98 or 100 to help clean the innards. I'd be inclined to put a new chain on as well, sprockets would be fine with that low mileage though.
Welcome to all things 14 buddy
Thanks All,
Good tips, definitely draining all fluids first and crank her carefully.
Got Hayne's as well, they suggest brake, clutch and fuel lines to be changed every 5 years, so that would be overdue too. Thinking to put HEL's in for brakes and clutch and seems I have to go and cut fuel lines myself.
Any suggestions where to get the usual consumables (filters etc) in AU for her?
Cheers,
Dan
Welcome mate. RMZ102 oil filter from Repco. Gulf Western Synnex3000 from them also, good oil IMO.
I will second the GW Syn-X 3000 Dan. I switched to that from Penrite on Grogs advice and it's been fine. On special at Supercheap auto now FYI.
Gulf Western Syn-X 3000 Engine Oil - 10W-40 5 Litre
by Gulf Western
$36.99 Now $27.69
l know oils can be a can of worms but l have used that Gulf Western Syn X 3000 for 50,000 kms or more. Change every 5000 kms. Nice gear changes. Good value.
Grogs Idea...... he must own the well.

Check them. How often do you change those lines to your car? After 20 years? 30 years?
It's a bit different thing if you want "tune" your bike with new lines.

Very valid - I guess I like doing things "by the book". On first glance they look great, so I probably just get her running and ride more and only fix things as needed :smile2:
DZ, thats a good plan. Change all the fluids, re grease swing arm and head eventually, bearings will be fine. Tyres, chain n sprockets need to be good. Pull the fuel pump, have a look then decide. Under tank will be corroded, clean it up and spray your choice of protectant. Lube everything that moves, levers, brake pedal etc. After that, checkout the new 14 owners list, tells how to adjust all, TPS, throttle cables etc. Makes a great bike ride perfect, they are a superb ride. Mine still amazes me years later and lots of other bikes ridden. They just dont do anything wrong, every other bike in my life, many, had a fault. Cant think of one, anyone else fault 14? Sorry just one fault, would love 50 more bhp and 4k revs, being greedy. One day ill fix that problem. :cheesy:
Thanks mate,
Appreciate all suggestions and after reading more on the forum I do think getting her on the road without overthinking it is the way to go. Already busy all weekends in Jan but will get all parts needed and tackle it on a weekend in Feb.
Think the tyres are gone though, you can see the rubber being dry and showing veins like dry clay soil...
Got a couple more questions that I will post and definitely let you know when she is running again.
Cheers,
Dan
Just ask when needed mate. I like to think i know 14 stuff but often get shot down, just always someone on here with great answers. There are some absolute geniuses.

Thanks mate and the strength is also a weakness of any community - great pool of knowledge but opinions are also a source of great controversy ;)
Did notice you suggesting a Repco OF but wonder if there is any list (and suppliers) available for the 1400 for other parts like AF, FF etc. in OZ or do we just have to wing it??
Cheers,
Dan

U wouldn't like having an extra 40/50bhp on your 14 its no fun!! :whistling: :onya:
100 extra hp is fun, but not necessary. Keep it stock :stir:
Hi
@DZ (https://gsx1400owners.org/forum/gallery/0/1-290517235220.png)
Whereabouts in North Brissie are you? I'm at Bracken Ridge.
I might have a few bits and bobs lying around that may be of use (bits I've blinged on mine) I'll have a look.
:onya:
Mike
Also make sure to check out the DOWNLOADS section in the top menu of the forum - there are all sorts of workshop manuals etc there that'll come in handy for you!
Thanks Mike,
Certainly heaps to explore and I am in Aspley. At this stage I just need time to get her running again and will take from there :smile2:
Cheers,
Dan
Welcome DZ, there's a number of Brissy blokes on here. Maybe we should all get together?
Hi
@GSX1400Convert ,
Thought there would be some regular catch-ups, let me know where they are.
If not we can start up a no-nonsense, no-expectations and no-bs Sunday morning coffee once a month with an optional ride...
Just need until Feb-ish to get her running, sadly no more free weekends in Jan.
Cheers,
Dan
Sounds good. Let's work on it ..... Sunday 9th 11am Story Bridge Hotel?
Hehe... like it but won't be ready by then. Still have to get tyres, get her running (fingers crossed) and she is also not registered. Earliest I can work on her will be in Feb.
But will definitely pick this up if some of you guys meet.

Hi mate, suggest posting it in the meetup board. As said I won't make a meeting in Feb as I am currently without a running bike but happy to join later this year....
Sorry, should have put Feb
DZ how have you got the engine casings so good, surely not just water...mine are showing some pitting, thought of painting black.

It was really just a quick wash and then a few hours cleaning the surface rust of metal parts. She was in storage for years, that might explain the condition of the engine.
Check out this thread RE the engine though: http://gsx1400owners.org/forum/index.php?topic=4885.0 (http://gsx1400owners.org/forum/index.php?topic=4885.0)
