Title: Whos good at working out areas?
Post by: Speedy1959 on Sunday, 01 September 2019, 03:29 AM
Hi you Brain boxes..

I have to work out the m2 of the floor area in a store room at work..
The "Powers that be" wish to know..
Can any of you lot do the maths to work out the area please?
I know its not bike related (That's why its in the "off topic" section)..

Any help appreciated

Now where is Andre ?? :)

The area is 51.63 m2

For the formula to work 2 opposite angles have to be known. I used GIMP to get the angles and plugged the data in an online calculator. https://keisan.casio.com/exec/system/1322718508 (https://keisan.casio.com/exec/system/1322718508) See attached screen shots as well.

In this particular case where one angle is a right angle, draw a line from the bottom right corner to the top of the 1.47 length. This creates two triangles. It's easy to work out the area of the bottom triangle.
1/2*1.47*11.13 = 8.181

The area of the new upper triangle can be worked out using Heron's formula.

https://www.mathopenref.com/heronsformula.html

The unknown length uses Pythgoras Theorem to work it out.
Sqrt(1.47*1.47+11.13*11.13)= 11.226
Put 11.226, 9.84, 9.3 into the Heron Formula =43.456
Therefore total area = 43.456 + 8.181 = 51.637

Which agrees with Andre.

After using numerous equations and formula I reckon its a big area  :)

That's cheating Notty, you only know that cause Mrs Notty was a teacher & I bet she told you.

Just drew the shape/angles etc on CAD & mine came out at 52.426 sq m    Different again. :bugga:

I don't think there is enough info in the original post unless you confirm the angle of the bottom left hand corner is 90 degrees.

Shaky hand/mouse syndrome or you did not account for the windowsill :rofl2:

Seriously, any will be more than fine. I doubt the "powers to be" want to know the square micrometer.
