Title: Do Ozzies get wasps?
Post by: Speedy1959 on Wednesday, 21 August 2019, 03:29 PM
Some time ago I was doing some woodworking in Mums garage and I kept getting wasps coming in..
I like Bees but feel no affection for Wasps..
Quite by accident I discovered an unbelievably effective Wasp killer!!
Far more "humane" than fly spray..
What was this miracle elixir?
WD40 !!

Seriously a very brief spray (nozzle removed) and the wasp drops like a stone mid flight..
It curls up tightly and is dead in seconds after trying to sting itself..

I have often wondered just how good fly spray is for your lungs when you spray it around liberally..
As for as I know WD40 wont kill you..

Anyone with a Wasp problem just try it..

We get Paper Wasps.

I try not to do them any harm.
Some wasps are necessary pollinators and pray on garden pests,
they serve an important role.

I am higher up the food chain than our Wasps ..
Compared to a wasp I am "an Apex Predator"
For them to survive me they must "evolve" to keep away from me  :stir:
I give to certain charities and yet I know a Bear/Shark/Lion would kill me despite the alleged good I have done in the world..
Nature is not particularly cuddly..
My nature is to use WD40 on something that gets drunk on our ripe plums and gets a crappy on for no reason and stings me..
Come to think of it People are a bit like Wasps.. Now wheres the WD40

I leave spiders and Bees but dont like wasps at all..

Best way to kill wasps?   Soapy water (dishwashing liquid is perfect) in a spray bottle.... much cheaper than WD40  :whistling:

I bought 4 litres of WD40 today.........
We had a wasp nest in our roof. We could see hundreds of wasp coming and going. Old farmer friend said wait till dark then put fly strike powder around the entrance. Wasps take it in and kills the nest. Worked a treat.

Catching, injuring, killing a wasp can get you a fine of up to 50000 €. Be careful when you ride through Germany so you don't hit a wasp :coffeescreen:

I am not bullshitting you.

QuoteAs a rule, the Germans only come into conflict with two types of wasps, the Paravespula germanica and the Paravespula vulgaris, ie the German wasp or the common wasp. Both species are under general protection in Germany. According to § 39 Abs. 1 Nr. 1 Federal Nature Conservation Act (BNatSchG) it is forbidden to willfully disquiet wasps or to catch, injure or kill them without good reason.

Some wasp species such as the round-headed wasp or head-horn wasps are even under special protection (§ 44 (1) Nos. 1 and 3 BNatSchG). Violations can be punished with fines of up to € 50,000.

But even if these wasps are protected, not always threatens the full fine. It must always be considered an isolated case. The amount of the fine is therefore always calculated individually.

All states in Germany fine for that. Top fines for most wasps range from 5000 to 50000 (2 states including mine do the 50000 fines). For especially protected wasps highest fine is actually 65000 €.

As to the why:

QuoteMany know the wasps only as "plague ghosts", but they are enormously important for our ecosystem. For example, a wasp state destroys up to 2 kg of insects such as mosquitoes, fruit flies or other pests during the day. Wasps also appear as scavengers because they need a lot of protein to raise their offspring. In addition, they are themselves a source of food for other animals. In this way they contribute to the preservation of the ecological balance. Rather unknown is their great importance as pollinators.
